DESIGN NAME: The Crafted Urban Sunroom
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential flat
INSPIRATION: Reading the building perimeter as a message to the dwellers is our first approach to relate design and the given space. Continuous glazings on two sides of the flat gives distinct feature and was hidden behind the original interior layout which made the whole flat look small and away from natural light. To well lit the space and create a spacious perspectives as well as playful circulation for kids and pets became our goal of intervention.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A 132 square meter two-bedroom flat designed to bring in joyful daylight as well as achieve flexible spatial quality and visual penetration out of its modest size. To make room for active pets and kids to play, we utilised floor zoning and various partition strategy for a continuous circulation while keeping identities for different rooms. The design embraces rich materiality and colour palettes as a manifest for modern urban home and a refined come-back of local construction techniques.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The clients are parents with a young daughter and a pet dog who live in this two-bedroom apartment. The open kitchen and operable partition between mater bedroom and living room suits the adult's need. On the other hand, the dog and toddler enjoys the open circulation and well-lit space.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Terrazzo flooring with custom mixed ingredient for desired pattern and colour. Customised shapes of brass dividers were embedded to avoid cracks on the floor and for aesthetic causes as well. High quality bricks were strategically formed as interior partitions with vents to allow better circulation. On the display sides, parametric patterns were applied by rotating individual brick to desired angle to enhance the visual playfulness in the flat, also as a challenge to current construction technique.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Various patterns on brick wall and its strength is a concern that required the design team and contractor to test and reinforce in order to present the variation but also withstand frequent earthquakes in Taiwan.
CHALLENGE: To communicate with masons in order to execute many custom items for a project is challenging. To match sampling of terrazzo mix to the actual surface area requires back and forth tests. To build brick walls with parametric patterns also require accurate digital simulation and translate the factors to the builders. Calibration is not a easy part.
