DESIGN NAME: Timber
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Phone Holder
INSPIRATION: A pocket holder for phones or tablets, as small as it gets, using the most of its shape and volume for as many functions as possible. The softly shaped oblique lines define the ergonomic usefulness of different phone positions, ensuring stability, multifunctionality and an open screen. The volume of the body is hollow and filled with electronics. But most of all this is a pleasant piece of wood, a piece of living nature combined with sophisticated electronics, that can conveniently be used as a mirror.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Pocket holder for phone or tablet, adapted for viewing video content and video communication which comes with a wireless charger and optionally built-in Bluetooth speakers. Designed from a massive piece of noble walnut wood of pleasant velvety touch and with unique natural pattern. It softly lies in the palm and is also a convenient mirror discretely closing the electronics on the back. Indispensable gadget in any pocket or purse.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The slot has universal width that fits phones and tablets of different thicknesses and sizes. The slot allows vertical or horizontal positioning of a phone. Slightly conical surface allows the wireless charging of the mobile phone in the horizontal position. The surface of the lid that discretely closes electronics hidden inside is used as a practical and convenient mirror. The holder in the turned position can be used as a mirror, facing us at a usable angle while it nicely fits in the palm of the hand.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2017 in Velenje, Slovenia. The first samples were made in October 2017. The selection and application of electronics was dispersed in collaboration with Janos Potocnik, UJP, Hrastnik. The product is manufactured by Coper Joinery, Skofja vas, Slovenia. Regular production with all the details is still under preparation. The project has been exhibited several times, twice in Slovenia at design exhibitions and at the L'Artigiano Fair in Milan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The body of the base is shaped using CNC technology from a piece of solid walnut wood and great attention is paid to natural graphic patterns, unique on each individual piece. The plug-in outlet and the audio openings are laser-cut. The dimensions are adapted to the harmonious combination with the phone, as well as the dimensions of electronics, the wireless charger and optional Bluetooth speakers of the highest quality, that are inserted into the body. The final manual grinding and coating with natural oil provides soft curves and a velvety touch. The mirror cover is slightly deepened to protect against scratches.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Pocket holder is useful as a wireless charger for phones with built-in Qi Wifi function, iPhone and other high-quality phones. During charging, the holder has to be plug-in to the power supply network. If desired, the phone can be connected with optional built-in Bluetooth speakers of the highest quality. The holder comes packaged in a gift box with an added silk handbag that can be used to store the holder while carrying it in a pocket or purse.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Most of the attention was devoted to researching relations between form and various functions, as well as the ergonomic aspect of each of the functions. The result is a thoughtful set of slopes that combine into a minimal cubature of a product with interdependent functions and ergonomically thought-out forms.
CHALLENGE: The greatest challenge was to find ergonomically relevant angles that interdependently correspond to each of the functions. These angles define the basic form of the product. The oblique lines are vitally connected to its final appearance.
