DESIGN NAME:
Trace of Normal

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Table

INSPIRATION:
Our team solved theme, " Everyday Matters, ". with our own interpretations. Modern people all have the desire to reveal their existence and to talk to someone. However, research and study has shown that they tend to feel burdened by too close relationships. After we captured these modern faces, we decided to suggest those people to use the table with thermo-paint, and the tea set. Which shows people to communicate only through the ordinary action.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Underneath the cup and tea pot, there are seal engravings. On the top of the table the thermo-paint is covered. When hot water is put into a cup, the temperature of the seal engraving rises. Seal engraving trace remains when people use a cup on the table. From the traces in our daily lives, one may feel that others exist in the same place without any conversation or contact and are communicating insincerely.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
he main ingredient of the table is the thermo-paint. With the kettle and cup engraved with a seal can make pattern on the table, when they have poured with hot water. The shape is a view of the wood from above. We have tried to recall the complexities of modern human relationships, such as branches, through our patterns. We made a design which makes it look Oriental. The table was influenced by Korean soban, and the kettle and cup were made with Korean traditional technique, 'ottchil'. Also made a combination with gold of static for the design.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Table on the top is coated with a special paint called thermo-paint. A table inspired by the traditional Korean furniture " soban " is made by the 3D program. Top of the table is urethane plywood, order production from CNC company. The body parts were ordered to be made by a metal processing company and finished with brass colors applied to the paint after the manufacture. The T-set is made with oak tree and also made with using brass. It is also painted with ottchil to make the wood's natural pattern look attractive.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Work material table: wood, thermopaint tea set: oak tree, Brass, ottchil work size table: Ø750X450 kettle: Ø86X230 tea cup: Ø70X145

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We wanted to give people to feel like they're in one place through these routine actions by raise and lower a cup on the table, even if they don't have any direct conversation or physical contact. When the cup containing the hot tea is lowered on the table, seal engravings under the cup makes stamped on the table. Through repetitive actions, you can see that the shapes of the seals are overlapping, and the patterns are being collected. The depth created by this cup is like a tangled human relationship, more likely to show our topic of modern human relationships.

CHALLENGE:
It was difficult to figure out what materials would enable to show silent communication. After a long pause, we found it thermo-paint but it was difficult to find the thermo-paint company in Korea. Also it was hard to find the right temperature only to response with the hot water poured cup, not with the human’s temperature. We have done ottchil on cup holder by ourselves, with the risk of ottchil danger.

PROFILE:
Sangmyung University ( republic of korea) / Life Art Design - Furniture Art Design Dept. We are students majoring in furniture creation at Sangmyeong College in Korea. We are monitoring people's lives, identifying things they lack in their lives (e.g., lack of communication), and making furniture available to fill them up. Instead of making a household as a functional aspect, it makes it capable of filling a person's emotional side. This is the value of our work and is what we always target. Functional furniture can only end in a person's convenience, but we think it has the potential to modify people's relationships and social mood. If we can move someone's mind through our furniture, it is our pleasure and excitement.
