DESIGN NAME: Carved
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wall Clock
INSPIRATION: This clock designed by Naoki Terada which gives an impression as if we cut letters out of a clock face by a chisel tries to handle with the graphic in the form. The shadows of letters which are carved bring a three-dimensional impression on the clock face and it changes an expression depending on the environment of the neighboring lights. The material of interior decoration and the technical conversion lead to the opportunity of the idea.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Naoki Terada's stunning new clock designs for Lemnos are, as the collection title suggests, "Carved".
Subtle, yet immediately noticeable, the numbers on these clocks are carved indents cut so close to the edge of the faces that the top of them are actually chopped off. This gives the numbers a drop-shadow effect that changes depending on where the lighting is the room.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This clock, with its numbers in a chiseled-out style, attempts to treat the graphic as part of the form. The shadows of the carved-out letters bring a three-dimensional impression to the clock face, with its appearance changing in accordance with lights located in its immediate area.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2009 and the product was released in October 2010.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: It is the same for any job but in design work, I think that it is necessary to have knowledge of plain results without trying.
However I think that flexibility to find a clue for new discoveries from the first try, even if it is obvious. Although the texture of the paint may be a small thing, I am satisfied that the quality of the work has been raised because I stuck with it.
CHALLENGE: Regarding the dial design, there were infinite items to consider, such as character balance, aspect ratio, depth of engraving, and the size of dial. The sense of balance will change greatly due to slight changes in size and shape because it is a simple and plain dial. It took a long time carefully for this work.
