DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
EcoTRY

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Flexible Recycling Point

INSPIRATION:
EcoTRY is underpinned by the principles of universal design that requires low physical effort to operate as main storage box is made of light, weaving recycling plastics. It promotes green living with low carbon footprints. Expandable wood desk provides enough area for operators to engage with public in an effective way. It serves as a mini table to conduct questionnaires and other promotion activities. This application already received full support from local recycler - WOODRITE https://www.woodrite.com.hk/

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
EcoTRY provides an alternative, flexible, and clean solution for operators to have size adjustment of collection boxes so that they can fit the needs of different living districts in Hong Kong. Each wood cover is closely packed with each other and attached to metal frame underneath due to magnetic effect. That means the expected amount of waste collected can be controlled by the operator in each waste collecting centre. Lowering the overall weight of the cart by adopting weaving technique to produce a number of rigid, recyclable collecting boxes to form its main body. Design provides adhesive tapes on-site for citizen who always forget to seal the batteries for recycle. Separation of plastic bottle (lid, body and label) can make recycling become effective and efficient, benefiting the whole industry.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The operator from Environmental Protection Department can modify the expected quantity and the categories of what they intend to collect due to different purposes and recycling strategies, for example, we may expect we could collect more aluminium cans in those districts having more schools and sports recreational centres, but not in aging living areas. The density of each district varies a lot. That is why a flexible collection point is need. The design team also believes that a movable design could facilitate people to engage with this new system through mobile promotion on streets. The black board drawn by white chalks can be easily changed according to the needs of operator - A mobile learning opportunity to promote Sustainable Living

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in Feb 2017 in Hong Kong and finished in June 2017

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Major material is reclaimed wood collected directly from recyclers as many unused construction materials are being disposed. Utilizing reclaimed wood as outer structural framework so that it could speak for itself. Reclaimed wood (pine, oak and walnut), metal frame with black paint, and recyclable weaving material. The production is supported by one of the leading furniture manufacturer in China. The first prototype is now exhibited at the local public garden close to one of the public housing in Hong Kong.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
180cm x 100cm x 70cm

TAGS:
sustainable development, active recycling, product design, green design

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
This is a research based project and EcoTRY is one of the research outcome and deliverable through Participatory Design Approach. By conducting participatory research with local citizen, street furniture manufacturers, operators from NGOs in sustainable development and other relevant stakeholders to discuss and sharing views on how to motivate citizen to participate in regular recycling activities and to promote better living cities through sustainable development.
