DESIGN NAME:
WeTown - A Green City for 40000 People

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
City for 40000 People

INSPIRATION:
Wetown is a collective idea from people around the World. Inspired by nature, people and technology, we are setting a benchmark for North American Cities.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
WeTown provides a sustainable city for 40000 residents in Canada.Reducing our reliance on automobiles, the project provides an infinitive loop to connect 36 buildings of apartments, offices, and retails. The 8 minute journey from home to work will be filled with farmers market, greenery, activities and excitement. Different active and passive strategies are also used in the buildings and master plan to promote a healthy lifestyle.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Over the next 15 years, 3 to 5 towers will rise on the site every 2 years. 10 phases of development will get all 36 buildings done. The aim is to balance work and live qualities during each phase. Some of the buildings will begin as office and gradually transition into apartment as the development matures.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in July 2017 in Abbotsford, Canada The project is estimated to be fully completed by 2027

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Pre-fabricated modules with local materials will be used to build up all the towers. It helps to speed the construction and avoid construction impact to the existing community. Local woods will be used for the main market area to lower carbon footprint of this project while keeping the local heritage to the farm culture.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Gross Floor Area is 1,287,235 m2. Number of Buildings is 36 and the tallest Tower is 212m high.

TAGS:
sustainable, city, green, future

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We conducted an international survey to see how people can improve their work life balance. Using the data and suggestions, we come up with a list of priorities and several must have items. We compared the results with a similar survey done in local city of the project site. We cross examined the similarity and differences. The similar items include efficient transportation, proximity to destination, better walkability, and more nature. The new qualities include better food option, more public art and better jobs.

CHALLENGE:
Getting water, drainage and traffic to work for 40000 people is the biggest challenge. We worked with traffic engineers and mechanical engineer to come up with solutions for road expansion, car sharing programs, water reduction programs, rainwater collection and grey water recycling.
