DESIGN NAME: Slid
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Disposable coffee lid
INSPIRATION: The major pain points we wanted to address through a new design of the lid were the flow of the drink, sanitation issues, and splash prevention. When drinking through conventional flat top lids, liquid flows quickly from cup to mouth through the spout and easily burning the tongue. The other major problem areas we examined were sanitation when securing lids onto cups and containing reservoir internally during user’s movement.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: SLID is a drink-through disposable lid with an angled-design that improves the flow of hot drinks and offers ergonomic references to prevent direct contact between the hand and the drinking hole. The design improves drinkability and addressing sanitation concerns of conventional flat top lids which offer limited drink flow and often do not offer physical or visual references when securing lids on the cup.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The new design adds both height and directional orientation to the lid through its distinct angle and tapering form, which allows for better control of the flow of hot liquids, offers ergonomic references to prevent direct contact between the hand and the drinking hole, and counters the sloshing motion of the liquid in the cup.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: August 2017- February 2018

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Injection molded polystyrene
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 3.5(W) x 3.5(d) x 1.5 (h)
TAGS: Hot-drinks, Flow, Ergonomics, Experience
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Observations and field interviews were the primary methods of problem framing and flow-testing of prototypes were executed for proving the concept.
CHALLENGE: We were faced with the challenge of designing for a saturated market, prompting us to investigate broadly about how we could explore new possibilities for existing objects within the to-go drink experience.
