DESIGN NAME: 10:1
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Compressible Furniture
INSPIRATION: The furniture is developed with inspiration in how urbanization in the future makes our living space smaller and how we as individuals has gotten a more nomadic way of living. 10:1 hopes to accommodate these new ways of living by making it easier to move around and allowing a more fluid living space by making it easy to compress and change a rooms function. The property of the furniture also fits our globalized ways of producing and minimized the carbon footprint in the transportation.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 10: 1 is a series of furniture consisting of a sofa, a lounge chair and a stool. The furniture is made from special dense foam that has the material property that it can be compressed down to 10% of the original size under vacuum. Making it more sustainable to transport the furniture from industry to store and easier to move from home to home.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The inside of the furniture is made from dense foam that has a very open structure and consists of a lot of air. By putting them into a special designed vacuum bag and sucking out the air it is possible to compress them down to different sizes and at it’s most down to 10%
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Eindhoven in Febary 2017 as one of my graduation projects and was shown at the DDW 2017 in October and is hopefully not done yet.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: 10:1 is a series of furniture that reflects our time. Reflects our news ways of living as urbanization makes our living environment smaller and smaller. Furniture has to follow this development and fit to this new way of living. We not only live on less square meters but our mobility has also increased. The idea of a home is less related to a specific space but increasingly related to the things we surround our self with. 10:1 is an attempt to create a series of furniture that can accommodate these switches in our ways of living and allowing a greater sense of belonging in a rapid changing world.
CHALLENGE: The Creative Challenges was as a young and inexperienced designer to work with and making a design that was fitting with the industrial ways of producing both in shape and construction.
