DESIGN NAME: Planik
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Calculator
INSPIRATION: The inspiration comes from the daily work in the architecture office where people come with a high motivation to invest money in their own home. They get an architectural plan, go to the bank and come back with overwhelming sadness because the costs for a house are much higher in reality than expected in their imagination. German laws allow only certain constructions that cost much more than before (for example in the time when their parents have built their house). PLANIK is the interface, in the middle of the bank and architect and it delivers the knowledge to inexperienced interested people.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In Germany, there is a subtle scepsis among the population, especially when it comes in anything that’s more expensive than a car. PLANIK is a platform with a calculator with a patented formula that combines properties of architecture, finances and general knowledge for people who are interested in building their own house. With PLANIK, you get a printout with all the necessary calculations, which provides substantial informations you can hand out to your local banking services in order to get a loan for building your house.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This platform can only be used with internet, so it is a free online platform, that should be used by all interested people in Germany who are interested in building their own house but don't know what are the exact costs. It is easy to use and a great possibility to get in touch with the topic.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The projects started in May 2017 and since then, it won 1 creative award, the "www.kreativsonar.de" - an award from the Rhineland-Palatinate/Saarland ministry for economy

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design was built in photoshop and afterwards programmed in HTML. The whole platform is based on HTML. The excel spreadsheets were outsourced to a data-bank that is not connected with the platform immediately, that means: only the result comes out of PLANIK. That helps us prevent hackers to get to the patented formula.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: You need internet to use the platform, which is responsive and intuitive. You can log in and save all your calculations for specifical house types and come back later to move on with the calculations.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design research was based on Google and Udacity, an online learning platform that was easy to handle but yet it was not hard to spend time on the platform because it was very user-friendly.
The architect from our team started an excel spreadsheet 13 years ago, wherein he has written all variables that are connected to each other and that are related to costs and efficiency for building a house. Researches in real-life-conversations showed, that interested people don't have much knowledge in this topic but they want to use the right instant of time because the bank taxes are low, so they are willing to invest. Also, the bankers spend too much time explaining every matter of expense, so this tool is the interface and in the middle of getting knowledge in this topic and being helpful and efficient for the architects and bankers.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part was the communication between programming all the variables from the excel spreadsheets, the formal aspects of the architecture and functionality from the designers. That is what costed the project 3 years of development before it went online.
