| DESIGN NAME: Letterforms PRIMARY FUNCTION: Album INSPIRATION: The main inspiration was the identity of The London Design Festival which was created by Pentagram. Dina Ruzha was inspired by colors and typography of the festival, she worked a lot of the quality of lettering and layout. The album contains works covering different directions of calligraphy from more classical types of writing to experimental ones, made by non-traditional instruments and materials. Particular attention in the album is given to Cyrillic calligraphy. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This album is the part of Dina Ruzha's big graduation project which she has done in collaboration with talented calligraphers from Russia and Ukraine. She would like to show calligraphy like an expressive and strong art. Dina Ruzha is a big believer in the emotion of calligraphy and the message that is sent before somebody begins to read before they get the rest of information. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It is the first Russian album which shows contemporary calligraphy and lettering works of Slavic calligraphers. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2017 in NYC and finished in June 2017 in St. Petersburg (Russia), and was exhibited in St. Petersburg (Russia) in November 2017. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Layout was done in Adobe InDesign, images were prepared in Adobe Illustrator, lettering was done in Adobe Illustrator SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 200 mm x Height 200 mm TAGS: calligraphy, lettering, Cyrillic, letterforms, letters, typography, letter forms, edition, art direction RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Dina Ruzha was inspired by Pentagram works, its high-quality typography. She tried to do her album the same way. CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this design was the selection of calligraphy works. It should be in the same style and taste. Dina Ruzha wrote a lot of emails to find the best calligraphy for her album, and thanks a lot for her calligraphy friends who helped to collect the material. NAME: Life'n'Letters PROFILE: This album of calligraphy is the part of my big graduation project which I have done in collaboration with talented calligraphers from Russia and Ukraine. I would like to show calligraphy like an expressive and strong art. I am a big believer in the emotion of calligraphy and the message that’s sent before somebody begins to read before they get the rest of information. It’s really exciting to see how calligraphy develops nowadays. The album contains works covering different directions of calligraphy from more classical types of writing to experimental ones, made by non-traditional instruments and materials. Particular attention in the album is given to Cyrillic calligraphy. Many artists study the history of Cyrillic. This is a unique material and the basis for the work. I thank all the participants of the project and suggest to go to the beautiful world of calligraphy. |
