DESIGN NAME: Skin Vitalizing Essence
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cosmetic
INSPIRATION: Aquatic Life was conceptualized after a backpacking trip in 2016 when graphic designer Ji Eun Jang and painter Jamie Lee went to the oceanside of South Korea. Jamie was completing an art piece at the time, but it was not until Ji Eun took her to see the ocean did she come up with the final details to finish her painting. In the same moment, Ji Eun was struck by the thought of microorganisms from the oceans living in our skin and associated the brush strokes and color from Jamie's painting with Prebiotics' elements as the organic lifeforms embedded within us.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design was made using parts of Jamie Lee's abstract acrylic art piece that represent the "ecosystem" of organisms present in Prebiotics7. There is an emphasis on the raw brush strokes, the definition of the details, and playful color scheme which results in a revitalizing and organic complexity that exudes a classy, yet accessible item. As a cosmetic product, the design entices viewers to connect the overall visual to the effect it gives them as it breathes life, color, and playfulness to their beauty when they use Prebiotics7.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This object is a standard product container which can be opened or closed to store the Prebiotics7 bottle. The added layers of texture and color can be felt by consumers as they see and feel the design as they open the product. As people study the design, the gold foil reflects light and gives contrast to the dark blue background to evoke quality and class. The lettering is clearly defined and easily readable while maintaining the complexity and feeling of the art which frames the text. The whole package invites consumers to view the package as an art piece first before it is seen as a cosmetic product. Then the specific details such as the product name and the rest of the text come into view that lures them further into the world of ingredients inside the product.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was started on December 2015 and the updated design was released on June 1, 2017

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Ji Eun translated Jaime's painting into a digital format by acquiring the rights to reproduce her work, imaging the piece into Adobe Photoshop, and creating a vectorized version of the design in Illustrator to be applied on glossy paper packaging. Reflex Blue was used for the main background to provide a deep "ocean" feel to the overall design. Hot stamping was used in applying the lettering to give a touch of texture. Gold foil is then spread on the edges of the design to create a glitter effect, then the Prebiotics and TMC-P lettering is stamped with additional foil and finally embossed to create the finished product packaging.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A focus group was done composed of the company's investors as the participants in which they all concluded that this design is better and agreed to change Prebiotics7's image to this. The effect of the overhauled design of the product was that Wynn and its investors reached their sales goals since this design was more attractive and appealing than the last one.
CHALLENGE: Translating Jamie Lee's art into a different context had its difficulties. I had to make a conscious choice of taking certain parts of the art and converting it into a consumer-friendly visual while retaining the art's original beauty and aura. Prebiotics is a cosmetic company which uses good bacteria in their products. In essence, my goal was to create a commercial design that represented the "good bacteria" that exudes brilliance and energy through my design and the microorganisms which this beauty inhabits.
