DESIGN NAME: Fuse with Cat
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Small Residential Interior
INSPIRATION: The design of this interior was inspired by a cat of the client. The fundamental purpose of this design was to create harmony between this cat and its owner. A cat had always been the minority of a human household in most cases. Queries on how the designer could overturn this inertial thinking became the motivations of creating a space that paid extra attention to the well-being of the life of a cat. This space was thus designed through the study of the activities, habits and daily routines of a cat.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: With most of the existing partitions teared down, this fifty square meter flat was redefined into an open plan for the access of natural day light and efficient ventilation. Resting area, storage, and cat walks outlined the prime features of this project. Slanted ceiling was formed to house infrastructure. Angled walls were built to induce light and shadows in order to visually increase the depth of space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The open plan created a warm and family-like atmosphere. Efficient communications were planned to happen in this open kitchen setting. While the owner utilized only one side of the dining table on a daily basis, the opposite side could be used by guest with the sofa allocated elsewhere. This dining table was designed for more than 8 people. Light well on the side wall served as a platform for the owner to monitor their cat from one side of the space to the other.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Studies on the habits of both the owners and his cat were made in this project. Comfort and safety had to be ensured for the coexistence of men and cat within the space. Locations of furniture, TV wall, kitchen and glass partition were under the designer’s consideration to comply such requirements. Windows were in particularly designed to a certain height to keep the cat out of reach, and yet create a dynamic flow of air for a pleasant living environment.
CHALLENGE: To accommodate a concealed ventilation and air conditioning unit within the 2.55 meter height ceiling; while keeping the cat happy by providing him a high level hide away space had been the strive for design balance. Partial inclined false ceiling as well as slanted vertical plains were used to incorporate the Air conditioning system and its air ducts and water pipes. Upright space was spared out for proper lighting design and to compose decent cat walks at ceiling level.
