DESIGN DETAILS |
DESIGN NAME: Pyeniny
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Audio Guide
INSPIRATION: Hiking the Pieniny with ethnologists who told many fascinating stories about the visited sites was one of the best experiences in our lives. It became the main inspiration for the app as we wanted to make this experience easily available for other mountain enthusiasts. The inspiration for the map design comes from the oldest preserved Pieniny map which combined the view from the top with the side view of the mountains. We drew the inspiration for the font from the Slavic runes and slab fonts.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The audio guide presents Pieniny's fascinating history, legends, believes and Slavic myths enclosed in 25 chapters, each written in a form of a tale told by the mysterious mountain spirit. The app takes advantage of GPS which allows to lead tourists along the routes and play particular recordings precisely in places they describe. The core of Pyeniny is a map which guides the traveller. There are no additional photographs or information that could distract the user from enjoying the nature.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Surely the knowledge provided by the app can be reached by reading guidebooks or visiting local museums. However, the most vivid experience is when all the senses are involved. Exploring the stories while being in the places where the described events happened is unforgettable. Hiring a local guide who is also a good storyteller might be expensive or hard while Pyeniny app is free and, after downloading the map, fully accessible offline.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started as Mateusz's MFA project in 2013 in Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice and finished in 2017 in Zlin, and launched in June 2017 worldwide for iOS and Android devices.
|
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Pyeniny is our brainchild as we not only designed the project but created all its content. Pawel wrote all the audio guide texts; Mateusz directed the voice actors and worked together with the musician on the soundtrack. Pawel was mainly responsible for the UX & graphic design, while Mateusz was busy drawing the map line by line, dot by dot on the iPad. It was indeed a meditative experience for him. He also designed the all-caps font which draws from alleged Slavic runes and slab serif fonts.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The app is available for iOS and Android devices in English and Polish language version.
Total time of recordings is 57 min 52 s in English and in Polish 57 min 02 s.
The map covers the area of about 34 square km.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Three types of research were conducted. The market research showed that there are no similar projects. The content research consisted of reading the guidebooks, history books and other publications as well as visiting local museums and institutions. We selected over 50 historical facts, 30 highlanders' legends, myths and beliefs which were the most interesting. The visual research regarded old Pieniny maps, looking for the most characteristic colours and mountain peaks of Pieniny.
CHALLENGE: We met the initial reluctance as people sometimes found encouraging the hikers to use mobile phones in nature as inappropriate. However, after explaining the project further, these fears disappeared. Further, we felt pressure from some user as they were either not pleased that the recording can be listened to only in specific places or that the app has not more functions (i.e. distance tracking). For us, the idea of location-based audio guide experience is the core of the app.

I am absolutely delighted with the award-winning design of Pyeniny. The audio guide is an ingenious concept that captures the fascinating history, legends, and myths of the Pieniny Mountains in a creative and immersive way. The use of GPS technology is particularly impressive, leading tourists along routes and playing recordings precisely in places they describe. The core of Pyeniny is the beautiful map, inspired by the oldest preserved Pieniny map, which guides the traveler. The font also pays homage to the Slavic runes and slab fonts, adding to the unique atmosphere.
