DESIGN NAME: Ostinato
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Dining Table
INSPIRATION: When exploring the expressive power of rhythm and repetition, music is the best inspiration. This piece materializes the concept of ostinato - a motif or phrase that persistently repeats in the same musical voice, frequently at the same pitch. In music and in this piece, the base/basso ostinato constructed as a repetitive pattern is the pillar that supports and emphasizes the rich musical harmonies that are developing on top.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Ostinato is a design object that explore rhythm and repetition as ways to transform materials. A dimensional, linear, rigorous and repetitive pattern is over-imposed on the natural fiber of solid wood to create a rich texture, an enhanced sense of materiality.
Ostinato is a quietly majestic piece with a pedestal silhouette in clean, minimalist lines, handcrafted from rich materials such as European walnut, and a type of Nero Marquina marble rich in distinct fossilized shells of marine animals.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Ostinato is a monumental dining table that can be successfully integrated in a variety of interior design styles, and paired with a wide range of dining chair models. The table also allows a great deal of customisation with a variety of material combinations (wood type and finishes, marble colours).
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project has been developed in Bucharest, August-September 2017. It was first exhibited in October at Musette Kube Gallery as part of "Materia - Off-Site Objects" exhibition in Bucharest.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The table central pillar is constructed in solid European walnut which has been milled on a special device designed and build specifically for this project in order to carve the parallel lines into the material. The marble top is reinforced with a steel plate. The table is meant to be shipped in two pieces, the assembly is very easy to do, the table top is simply rotated to screw into the wood base.
The materials chosen are of best quality: solid walnut wood (60mm thickness), and a special type of Nero Marquina marble that feature very well preserved marine fossils. The wood is oil finished, the marble is sealed for increased protection agains acidic liquids and food stains.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions of the given example:
Table top diameter: 1400 mm
Table height: 750 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research was focused on figuring out the best characteristics of the texture routed into the wooden central pillar: proportions in relation to the overall volume of table and table base, width and depth that will also allow manual sanding and oil finishing. A number of tests were carried out both on flat and curved surfaces in order to find the most aesthetically appealing characteristics. The next research phase was developing technical solutions to implement the pattern and handcraft the piece.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part consisted of manually milling the straight lines into the table wooden base on a curved surface. After finding the best proportions (width, depth) on a flat surface, we have constructed a machine with a series of guides, a rotating mechanism, a goniometer, and a hand router. Another challenge was offering the marble top enough support and strength while balancing on a centre pillar. In order to achieve this without any drills into the material, we have chosen to laminate a black steel plate which then screws into the wood base.
