| DESIGN NAME: Mercku PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mobile application INSPIRATION: The inspiration for design stems from the desire to give hosts full control of their system, to satisfy network control needs. For example, if a child is watching videos late a night, controlling their bandwidth will take away that ability. Also, managing users on the platform make it very easy to remove unwanted visitors. The Mercku application aims to put the full control of the system in the hands of the host. Lastly, the dashboard is intuitive and easy to use. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Mercku mobile application is designed to give users full control over their home's WiFi system. This application gives hosts the ability to see who is using the WiFi system, and also limit the amount of bandwidth for each user. Furthermore, a simplified login system allows new users to join by scanning a QR code. Lastly, hosts can also remove unwanted users, as well as blacklist users, so they cannot login anymore. The interface is aesthetically pleasing and intuitive. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The application is clear and easy to navigate. It is a mobile application, meaning that the user will operate the system from their Android or iOS devices. The interface itself shows the host the number of users on the network, the amount of data they are consuming and give the hosts abilities to ban, remove or add users with ease. Also, the system lets the host know how fast the network is performing and where the bottlenecks lie. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project began in September 2017 and designs finished in November 2017. The Mercku application was showcased at Web Summit in November 2017 and CES in January 2018 This application is already in use by early adopters. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Design: Sketch 4.9 / Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 / After effect CC 2018 Programming: Android and iOS native languages Research: empirical personal research and LinkedIn poll SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Above iOS 8.0 / Above android 4.2 TAGS: WiFi, Mesh, Router, Hardware, IoT, System Management, Software, Application, APP, Mobile RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The Mercku Mobile Application controls the entire Mercku WiFi system and gives more control to the hosts. More than 500 candidates from personal connections, and randomized outreach on LinkedIn where polled. Both qualitative and quantitative questions were asked. Research showed users desire the ability to have full control, allowing them to ban individuals, limit bandwidth and solve the tedious process of logging onto the network. These features are added to the application. CHALLENGE: The challenge in designing a system management application is the balance between functionality and ease of use. Having too many functions makes the application more powerful, but steepens the learning curve. The Mercku Mobile Application only focuses on three main areas: connectivity, user management, and network information. This helps to make the application both powerful, and also clear, and easy to use.
