| DESIGN NAME: Lacrimosa PRIMARY FUNCTION: Eye-wear INSPIRATION: LACRIOSA is a collection of eyewear inspired by the tale of Siren tears turning into pearls as well as Zbigniew Preisner's Requiem mass. Jewellery and eyewear designer Fei has gone through depressions facing gender awareness when sorrow and tears were his only companion. Each pearl at the edge of the spectacles imitating tears is mourning. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 异色 is a pair of rosy eyewear with pearls & golden frames, part of the eyewear collection LACRIMOSA. Originating from gender awareness issuses, it is designed with a theoretical usage of erasing sexual discriminations and reconstructing confidence. In practical use, the center piece that combines two spectacles can be worn on its own as a nose piece or an earing,while the rest still functions as a hand-hold facial ornament. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Fei intends to examine the distortion of humanity caused by single aesthetic. The work aims to eliminate this psychological contradiction, to theortically fix this Narrow-Vision problem. Worn on those who suffered or are suffering from gender issues, they could raise their heads,stop the weep and regain their confidence; while worn on those who tend to judge, they’d understand the beauty of diversity. Only by opening our eyes shall we see the dance on our nose. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2017 in Birmingham,UK and finished in May 2017 Birmingham,UK, and was published on Fucking Young! Magazine in September 2017. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: I cut off brass and copper tubes of 60 degrees with the help of a mitre jig and then soldered them together. Tubes of selected sizes were placed one in another and soldered with the rest metal parts. Hand polished frames were plated in nickel then 24K gold. I drilled holes on pearls and hand-dyed acrylic spectacles and connected them with brass wire. Each edge of the frame was sealed by a pearl. Materials: 24K gold, silver, brass, copper, nickel, acrylic, pearls SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 80 mm x Depth 85 mm x Height 170mm TAGS: eyewear, fashion, accessories, jewellery, pearls RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Primary research includes photographing Fei's life and drawings through water colour around the theme. Secondary research involving Fei visiting Munich Jewellery Week and Yorkshire Sculpture park, record inspirations from other artists. Contextual research contianing jewellers like Miko Chen and eyewear designer Paucy Lau, etc. They are of direct stimulation to Fei's design and creations. CHALLENGE: Fei is also keen on exploring multiple wearabilities and functions. As is shown in a pair of golden-framed glasses with pearls,the center piece that combines two spectacles can be worn on its own as a nose piece or an earing,while the rest still functions as a hand-hold facial ornament.
