DESIGN NAME: Flow
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Oled lamp
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for this project came from my fascination with the amazing properties of LG OLEDs. Their effortless flexibility and soft natural light bring to mind the flow of a Sun Salutation yoga practice, which is a sun praising morning yoga sequence that combines light and movement. I wanted to create an object that complements a balanced lifestyle with. OLEDs light is a natural light with no glare and no UV and little heat emission, which helps create a healthy environment.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Flow is a lamp designed with a purpose of providing a room with minimalist elegant decor piece that will flood the space with warm, non-glare ambient light. The lighting part of Flow is made of two 0.4mm OLED panels placed on thin brushed aluminium frames forming a shape of letter U or S depending on how they are positioned. The aluminium elements can be disconnected and inserted upside down allowing four shape configurations. The relationship between the marble base, the aluminium pole and the light panels create a dynamic motion structure that is organic in its form.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Flow is designed to enhance interior living space with healthy, non-glare, low UV emission light. The user can obtain varying lighting effects by playing with the positioning of the two curved arms, creating upwards or downwards U-like shape or by leaving one arm reaching upwards and clipping the other arm round to face downwards to create a lighting “wavy” shape. The OLED panels have two lighting settings as well, so the user may choose whether they prefer a lighter or darker lighting.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I decided to design Flow after I discovered LG OLED light panels – a new hi-tech lighting system that provides unprecedented design opportunities. Having tested the mechanical properties of OLED panels (very thin, flexible/bendable, natural non-glare light) I began researching possible applications. Since the inspiration came from the very organic nature of the panels I focused mostly on qualitative research in the field of human-centred product design that would respond to growing awareness of the importance of balanced lifestyle.
CHALLENGE: When I first started exploring how I can utilise the versatile nature of the OLED panels to create a lamp that would provide various shape options, I started reaching overly complicated structures that would be both confusing to users and challenging in production. I had to become rigorous during the design process in letting go of some possible applications and prioritising the functions that are truly meaningful for the desired outcome.
