DESIGN NAME: Mercku M2 Hive
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mesh WiFi system
INSPIRATION: Based on our research, in today's homes, over fifty percent do not have reliable WiFi coverage. The reason is that the architecture of each house is unique, and WiFi signals cannot penetrate walls. Thus, having a system of many nodes is more efficient than a single signal emitter.
The inspiration for the design comes from the Hive and Bee system, where the Hive act as the signal's originator and these little Bees are located around the Hive, extending the coverage of the entire colony.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The M2 Hive is a WiFi system that balances flexibility and performance.
The system uses many nodes, named "Bees", to extend the range of the M2 WiFi router, which acts as the "Hive", controlling the nodes as one single system. Thus, every location, even upper floors, and basements will become blanketed with a stable signal.
Furthermore, as every home is unique, users can easily connect and disconnect individual Bee nodes by plugging into the sockets near their desired location.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The strong performance from the M2 Hive System is driven by antenna design, transceiver power, and system noise reduction.
The antenna uses a patented design, originated by the team that revolutionized smartphones. The transceiver is built in-house, resulting in much more efficiency. Lastly, the Wi-Fi has reduced system noise, applying theories crafted over the past decade - all resulting in superior performance.
This product is easy to use and starts working the moment it's plugged in.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project began in September 2017 and designs finished in November 2017. The M2 Hive System was exhibited at Web Summit in November 2017 and CES in January 2018
This system has already started shipping products to early adopters.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The Mercku M2 Hive System sets out to solve the problem of poor Wi-Fi connectivity. More than 500 candidates from personal connections, and randomized outreach on LinkedIn where polled. Both qualitative and quantitative questions were asked.
This research concluded that more than fifty percent of people have areas of low WiFi connectivity, and they desire flexibility since all homes are unique.
Thus, the concept of the Hive System router was born, and the ability to link up many nodes.
CHALLENGE: The hardest challenge in the design process is balancing performance and aesthetics. The product, according to the research, needed to fit nicely within the decors of a home, be relatively small, but yet boast market-leading performance.
The challenge manifested itself when the device, small, needs to be flexible enough to fit any plug. The node is shrunk to only thirty percent of that of competitors. This tiny size, balanced with the desired performance made the design process complex.
