| DESIGN NAME: Jal PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lamp INSPIRATION: The Jal (Just Another Lamp) was born from that very moment when a fleeting idea was caught by a designer as he doodled his way through a meeting. Obviously, the meeting then went off-topic, and the Jal was refined and developed into what it became today. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Just Another Lamp, Jal, is based on three main principles: simplicity, quality and purity. It involves the simplicity of design, the quality of materials and the purity of the product’s purpose. This it was kept basic but also gave importance to both glass and light in equal measure. Because of this, Jal can be used in a variety of ways, formats and contexts OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The light itself is an Led bulb, so it won’t ever heat up, making the Jal an ideal stand for your pencils, plants, or bits and bobs. The bulb can be oriented either way, allowing you to use the lamp in any orientation that you’d like. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Each hourglass component of the Jal is handblown one by one in Barcelona. It comes with a slight notch in its rim to allow the lamp’s cable to slide through. The glass material it is borosilicate glass. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Jal is made in two sizes, but also comes with two finishes that each have their own unique character to them. Jal mini: Height 220 mm x 180 diameter Jal: Height 330 mm x 180 diameter TAGS: Purity, simplicity, quality, versartile RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After studying different glass types, we decide to make our lamp with Borosilicate. The common type of borosilicate glass used for laboratory glassware has a very low thermal expansion coefficient, this reduces material stresses caused by temperature gradients, which makes borosilicate a more suitable type of glass for lighting products. CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was to create a lamp based on its simplicity and elegance. We understand that less is more, and under this premise, we added the minimum components to our lamp.
