| DESIGN NAME: Cork Trays PRIMARY FUNCTION: Versatile Trays INSPIRATION: The inspiration for this concept was to redesign sustainable & versatile trays of bygone era which were usually in wicker, this series of objects looks to the purity and essence of traditional design, the designs brief was to come up with a beautiful, poetic, ecological series with contemporary expression. The design had to be pure in it's form of calming geometry with natural texture of cork, something that is unobtrusive. The product had to look beautiful when in use or not. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Made in Cork, which is excellent anti-bacterial and moisture proof. It uses two variants of cork to make this minimal, soft and essential object, the form explores the material properties and structure. The strap to hang it on the wall is made of rubberized for its strength and flexibility and the rest of it is made in more stiffer natural cork.The trays come in three variations -A Soft-Square, Circular & Loop. They can be used as stationary holders, fruit trays or jewelry trays. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As it used the 100% natural materials, it is quite sustainable and ecological, maintenance free as the cork is anti-bacterial and anti fungal, quite long lasting and gets better with usage. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The use of this natural material in it's variations from rubberized to the natural is quite unique in terms of its crafting, from 2.5mm thin layers that are glued together to for the structure. The design transcends it's physicality to become something that is quite poetic. No coating or polish is required that makes it more noble and humble, honest to the nature. The materiality in it's tactility and light weight is something that can been appreciated to. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The dimensions vary from piece to piece, is also customizable to a certain degree as required in the context of the user. NAME: SAIF FAISAL DESIGN WORKSHOP PROFILE: SAIF FAISAL design workshop is an interdisciplinary design studio started in 2014, working across Architecture, Product design, Furniture, Lighting, Craft, Interiors, Brand Identity, Design Development, Creative Direction, Motorcycle design, Automotive racing & Jewelry Design. We represent a new breed of bold Contemporary Indian designers. We have launched a 3D printed product with the groundbreaking innovative brand OTHR and another one is in development. Among others, we have collaborations with the Danish brand BOLIA, a wrist watch for MAUUDHI, a series of home-wares for Global Kangaroo, Furniture and lighting for Godrej, lighting commissions for Kart Group, Dubai, and Interior design project for CAFE LAMBRETTA, Dubai, A Solar lighting project in Mozambique, East Africa & many others. We have been selected by Marcel Wanders and ELLE DECOR India as one of the promising young designers. We are published internationally in Monocle, Designboom, Dezeen, Design-milk, Minimalissimo, MondoArc, Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Elle India, Elle Netherlands, Leibal, Curbed NY, Adorn, Freunde von Freunden, INC., Home Review, Platform, Journal Du Design, Yanko Design, ICON and many others. Our work has been exhibited at 100% Design London, India Design ID Delhi and TRENDS D/Code Art & Design Fair Mumbai. We recently recieved LEXUS DESIGN Award India 2018 for the category 'Design for Craft'. We received two awards at the ELLE DECOR EDIDA 2017 for Furniture and Table top category and received EDIDA 2015, EDIDA 2016 and TRENDS EXCELLENCE Awards 2016 commendation for lighting. We were also nominated for BE OPEN Awards 2012, IDF 2013 and won I- Design Award 2014, Godrej Design Lab 2015 for two products. |
