| DESIGN NAME: Skinners PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ultraportable footwear INSPIRATION: The reason to create Skinners was to provide people with a compact yet protective footwear for sports and traveling without all the bulk and weight of regular shoes. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Skinners are innovative footwear designed for travel and sports enthusiasts. Their minimalistic shape combines the freedom and portability of socks with the essential protection and durability of shoes. Thanks to the compact size and a "second skin" feeling activating each muscle and tendon of the foot, Skinners can be used as primary or backup footwear for countless of outdoor or indoor activities. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Skinners were designed to be easy to use and maintain. Feeling when wearing them could be called to certain limit addictive. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started as a Kickstarter campaign in 2016 and became the most successful footwear crowdfunding project ever. Company's HQ is located in Brno, Czech Republic. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design solution is basically "the sock-shoe fusion". To do so, we developed and patented zero-waste technology that uses no glues or seams that could fall apart over time and makes Skinners washable. Despite their fragile look, the use of custom-made threading and anti-abrasive phthalate-free (also BPA-free) Swedish polymers guarantees that every pair can last up to 650 km (based on lab tests and customer reviews on ultra-long hikes). Skinners are hand-made in the EU (Czech Republic). SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Sizes: 36 - 49 (FR) / Weight: 120g - 190g (per pair) / Machine washable TAGS: skinners, footwear, socks, shoes RESEARCH ABSTRACT: 1) Research pointed out that to enhance performance, move faster and go further sports people use a lot of particular kinds of footwear: rollerblades, cycling shoes, cleats, climbing shoes, hiking boots, etc. On the other side, this footwear is too often so specialized that users are forced to sacrifice on comfort, convenience, and even safety. Skinners were developed to overcome the limits, where footwear starts to be a burden rather than a benefit. 2) To fit the majority of people over 300 different feet on four continents were analyzed and based on that molding process was designed and developed concerning the specific conditions of every manufacturing industry involved. CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was how to fuse a sock and a shoe with all their properties into one uniform yet functional product. In the development phase, the problem was how to combine and adjust needed technologies to create the desired outcome.
