DESIGN NAME: TC Nexus
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Tie Clip
INSPIRATION: As a Designer, Jeweler, CNC Machinist, and small business owner, I am always intrigued by mechanical components in the world around us and I am always looking for my next product idea. This design came as a result of a desire to create a tie clip that I personally wanted and that did not yet exist. My previous designs in tooling coupled with a former men's wedding ring design led me to the creation of this tie clip.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The TC Nexus is a limited edition, mechanical over-center mechanism tie clip assembly that is CNC machined from Certified American Made Grade 5 Titanium and carefully assembled and finished personally by the hands of the designer, one piece at a time. Unlike traditional tie clips that require an internal spring, the TC Nexus is completely fluid and flexible until joining a neck tie to its backing dress shirt. Operation is simple and requires only pinching two points of the levers to open and close the mechanism, but must be on the tie to provide the clamping pressure necessary to close. The TC Nexus will be limited to 50 pieces worldwide.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Color coded arrows point to each other while in either the opened or closed positions, denoting that pinching the levers together will achieve the opposite position from the current state. The satisfying snap of the mechanism is a result of the tension and flexibility of the natural spring and elasticity of the titanium itself.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project idea was conceived in late 2016, while the design was modeled, tested, and machined in January and February of 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The TC Nexus Tie Clip starts with a fully functional 3D CAD model that is programmed in a computer aided machining program before it is CNC Machined one assembly at a time in a state of the art CNC Milling Machine, using the best materials available. Each tool-path is carefully processed and manipulated to provide optimal surface finishes and acts as an extension of the artist's tools, with precision not achievable by hand. Each component receives finishing touches by hand after machining to provide a smooth, consistent feel, and is then carefully assembled, piece by piece at the jewelers bench.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 6.4mm x Depth 15.9mm x Height 42.8mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Due to previous design experience with this same type of mechanism in other products I have designed, research and development in this product was accelerated and mostly required multiple prototypes to be 3D printed for proper tie fitment as well as placement and machined to find the ideal tension desirable in the mechanism for securely holding a neck tie to a shirt. A new combination of anodizing, engraving, and finishing techniques were tested to add ease of use for operation in the prototyping phase. Several prototypes have been made to reach the current design model.
CHALLENGE: Because the spring in this tie clip is actually a combination of the upper face (in other words, the main body) and lower tension arm instead of a separate internal spring, the process of finding an ideal opening/closing tension and "snap" of the mechanism for a common thickness of ties and shirts is a bit of a challenge because the fabrics used for those garments vary. The end product has a tension mechanism suitable for the greater majority of ties and shirts.
