DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
The Parametric Wave

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Restaurant

INSPIRATION:
Conceptualized to give an experience of dining under the large faux sunken boat surrounded by fluidic waves, Farzi Café at Oberoi Mall will show the homecoming in Mumbai with a fresh breeze of spatial design. Parametric design methods are used to design the waves and symbolizing a restaurant under the Mumbai sea. “As sea waves undulate to express constant dynamism, we capture their essence and beauty in static forms using parametric design methods coupled with digital fabrication techniques”.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The complete restaurant is a story that unfolds as a visual experience that mimics an under-water dynamic space with horizontal and vertical fins that combine to form waves using stacking methods devised by the designers. This creates a serene-yet-strong ambience in the restaurant which remains busy with the organized seating that is divided into multiple zones by use of strong colours & fabrics, wherein the flooring pattern and levels create a sense of visual privacy in the otherwise open space.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The complete restaurant is a story that unfolds as a visual experience that mimics an under-water dynamic space with horizontal and vertical fins that combine to form waves using stacking methods devised by the designers. The methods include board-to-board stacking, alternate-board stacking and double-alternate-gap stacking as bar-stage monolith, wall paneling and false ceiling morphology. This creates a serene-yet-strong ambience in the restaurant which remains busy with the organized seating that is divided into multiple zones by use of strong colours and fabrics, wherein the flooring pattern and levels create a sense of visual privacy in the otherwise open space. The furniture is custom-designed for different spaces looking at space optimization due to high rental prices in Mumbai, as well as comfort and design language. While tables and chairs are kept fairly simple in geometry, a touch a brass-finish is embedded in all furniture, as running strips or support legs to match the overall colour and material palette of the design.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Project started in June 2017 and finished in October 2017 in Mumbai, India.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The fluidic spatial design is complimented by use of ‘boats’ as props to demonstrate dynamism and movement. While there is a large floating boat thoughtfully placed at an angle in the centre of the restaurant, there are 318 small boats folded out of laser-cut brass sheet in an origami pattern that combine in a series of rows suspended at variable heights. Each boat is fitted with a 1 watt LED fixture to create lighting moods using dimmers. As a collective, the hanging boats form a double-curved smooth surface that is perceived as a breeze as the lights come up and is seen from outside and inside of restaurant. The lighting sequence is designed to create different moods and effects using DMX lighting controller.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The Bar Area and Stage are assembled piece by piece, horizontally stacked in rubber-wood boards to form a sculpted feature element as a monolith wave. Two levels of seating area with smoking room and stage have been designed in 2300 sqft seating 88 covers to ensure planning efficiency. The restaurant front is recessed to give a distinct character by incorporating a balcony-style terrace which is adaptable to be used during live performances as the gigantic 15-feet long doors slide and fold to add floor area. The angle of the large board is in-sync with the curves that cut along the false ceiling in alternate fins that are fixed under rafters to hide the services such as HVAC ducts, Electrical Conduits and Fire Fighting Systems. A total of 287 fins which are CNC cut out of fire-treated rubber-wood boards are assembled with a numbering sequence that was derived out of Parametric Design Software used to design this fluidic space.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The complete restaurant is a story that unfolds as a visual experience that mimics an under-water dynamic space with horizontal and vertical fins that combine to form waves using stacking methods devised by the designers.

CHALLENGE:
Project timelines and budgets were contradictory to the project vision and demanded a high use of technology for design, resolution, development, fabrication and assembly of this complex space which had to be built by a local team of contractors and vendors who would otherwise not be acquainted to such projects in India. Use of Computational Design and Parametric Techniques is evident in the design language, which had to be coupled with Digital Fabrication Methods to ensure accuracy and precision with cost-optimization. The design language is typical of the studio’s work which was seen as precedent in the project, but articulated in this project as a larger scale than usual. The studio is currently working on scalable systems using parametric design to carve this design language on much larger scale in interior design and architecture.

rat[LAB]INTERIORS

PROFILE:
rat[LAB]INTERIORS is a subset of rat[LAB]-Research in Architecture & Technology, started as an initiative by Anchal Chaudhary & Sushant Verma to explore formal intersections of parametric design techniques and interior spaces. The collaborative venture focuses on rational use of technology for design of interior spaces, to foster memorable spaces, distinctive brands and meaningful experiences. There is a strong intent of creating transformative spaces that can positively affect the usability by creating an exchange between the interior and exterior environment. rat[LAB] was started in London as an independent research laboratory to unify design and technology through advanced computation. We now have a studio in New Delhi, India set up as a hub to connect the entire network of rat[LAB] spread across UK, Europe, USA & Asia through a cloud-based setup. Our team comprises of architects, interior designers, computational designers, engineers, sustainability consultants, digital fabrication experts, robotics developers and urban planners and we facilitate architects, planners, product designers, developers and designers from all disciplines to help them develop their work further through use of advanced computation. We aid designers in achieving design performance and efficiency w.r.t. environment, structure, time, aesthetics and workflow.
