DESIGN NAME: Loop
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mirror
INSPIRATION: As one of our main guidelines, we opted to create a simple and clean design but even so with decisive presence. The intention is that the piece work in complement with architecture and interior spaces, not standing out as an individual object but complementing and adding value to them. This concept reflects on the way it is made. No glue, screws or welding: its structural system allows a result of a higher aesthetic level with a well resolved composition.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Three simple complementary pieces in a harmonious balance are the focus of this product. An unusual structural system guarantees a well resolved and delicate look to the piece, highlighting the characteristics of the materials and its particular design. Through a precise fit the steel frame attaches to the concrete base only by a pin, joining all its parts in a single structure.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: One of the intentions of creating this particular constructive system is to provide an interactive design that enables the user to understand clearly how the product was made, creating a connection between them.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2017 and finished in February 2018 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: All the pieces of Loop Mirror were created with cnc technology. The concrete base, the most complex piece to be developed, was first produced in machined mdf board to be used as a matrix for the polyurethane mold. This mold is composed of three different parts, as the piece needed specific shapes to fit the mirror glass, wall bracket and pin to frame support, all in a single piece. The frame consists in a simple machined steel strip with two holes that will fit into the concrete pin to hold all the structure together.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: What about rethinking materials, processes and constructive methods every time we create a new product? It was over this reflection that we started researching and studying how we could produce, under this concept, an ordinary piece as a mirror. Our idea was to optimize to the maximum its structural system and wipe off anything that could exceed its design. In addiction we avoid having any unnecessary waste of material what naturally conduced us to explore digital techniques.
After the hole structure was solved the aesthetic question came as a consequence, giving the mirror its own personality.
CHALLENGE: The whole mirror structure was challenging as we had three different materials with its own properties working together aesthetically and structurally. The concrete mold was the biggest challenge of the project, once it is quite a limited tool to be used for non-symmetrical and complex objects, as we needed. Besides that, each part of the set had to fit precisely into each other, which generated a sequence of many trials until we get to the best result.
