DESIGN NAME: Little Nest
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cradle - baby bed
INSPIRATION: inspired by the cocoon of the silkworm that is void of every unnecessary detail, but still ensuring perfect safety and gentle protection to its inhabitants. Natural materials and handmade quality are to ensure the best rest of the child sleeping in this cradle.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Shaped out of one single wool felt the cradle hugs around the baby as a protective shell taking care of it's peaceful rest.
The cradle once it is hanged reacts to every little move of the child and sways it gently. This gives the baby a very similar feeling that it enjoyed prior to its birth.
Due to perfectly simple geometry, 100% natural materials and the single-point suspension, babies can enjoy gentle care very similar to what they experienced prior to their birth.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: We put the wool felt on the shape and form it with hands and pull it tight. After it needs to dry in a hot room for a day. After we repeat the procedure with the second layer of wool felt. Once finished we cut the edge of the cradle and get the wood core out. As a final touch, we brush the surface and stitch the layers together by hand. After that, the leather straps are applied and fixed.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: one year, 2015-2016 Budapest

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I made a research on cradles historical samples and production methods. Felting is a traditional Hungarian technique to make clothing and tents! After several tests and prototypes, made with folk artists and hatters, I decided to use a ready, machine made felt to ensure continuous quality. In the process of sampling, I worked with Master Hatter Laszlo Girardi who became my production partner as the only person who was able to work this difficult material and achieve the wished quality.
CHALLENGE: To get the natural material in the right shape and get it to stay in it once the wooden core is token.
