DESIGN NAME: CENTRE
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Dining Chair
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for Centre chair comes from the nature of our local craftsmanship placing the manpower in the center of all trades. Here, the angular legs view from one side of the chair is inspired by the old Vietnamese character of "Nhân" which means human.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Simple chair with small armrest originally developed for an iconic culinary space overlooking the new rooftop garden at Saigon Centre, thus bearing the name of this metropolitan location.
Centre's design is honest to its natural oak material while showing hand-crafted details of solid timber carpentry. Carefully shaped backrest is joined invisibly to follow the human body and create a visually lightness to this piece of furniture.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Centre chair is fully assembled with solid timber seat and hand carved backrest.
Loose cushions are available for better seating comfort and also to add some colors and softness to the chair.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in May 2017 in Ho Chi Minh City and completed in September 2017, and was put in used at a local restaurant from October 2017.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This design is made to bring out the beauty of simplicity in the chair itself and also to deliver an important message of modern craftsmen's values in our everyday's products.
CHALLENGE: The challenge with Centre design comes from the simple backrest and its central support. This small timber panel double function supporting the backrest and locking the solid timber seat in place. Thus, it holds the chair together.
