DESIGN NAME: Portal
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Light Hallway
INSPIRATION: Inspired by neon light and prisms, this led light hallway welcomes visitors into the plaza of the building. The building owner commissioned the designer Akiko to make the originally dark and unnoticeable hallway 'pop!' She was allowed to modify the floor which led to the design that the viewers can walk through the design. Like her favorite story 'Alice in Wonderland', up or down, viewer's perception could flip in this spiral. Also she liked the idea of creating 'flow' with the animated beam of light. As an artist based in Los Angeles, she is influenced by James Turrell's light and space movement and taking a step forward.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 'Portal' is a 7000 pixels of animated light hallway created by artist Akiko Yamashita in the weller court plaza in Little Tokyo district of downtown Los Angeles in 2015. It brings color and motion to the city center. It has become a destination portal - formally a dark tunnel - has been transformed by this Japanese artist. Her spiral beam of light inspire children to adult express their own creativity.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is a light hallway that people can go inside, walk through, touch and interact. Illuminating the subject from multiple directions make unique pictures and videos. Color and the animation is expressed dynamically as if like the hallway is a living creature breathing.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2014 and completed in 2015. This is a permanent installation that is running 24 hours 365 days until today. Location is weller court, 123 Astronaut E S Onizuka St, Los Angeles

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Akiko used individual addressable led. Total of 41 universes. She chose 10mm led strip light bar channel with white acrylic diffuser. Architectural modeling and concept design is made using Autodesk Maya. Animation system, led mapping, dmx output is done using Derivative TouchDesigner.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 3.3 m x Depth 20 m x Height 3 m

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Akiko did research for possible light medium including projection, led screen, led pixel tape, laser and neon. Led pixel tape was cost effective and suitable for the design considering it is outdoor permanent installation that needs to survive through the weather and people who can touch and cause damage to the artwork. Embedding the light to the wall and the floor made smooth surface and it was both practical and aesthetically pleasing. Experimented with different width of the track and she liked thinnest u-channel and diffuse acrylic cover that made the led pixels look like a laser beam. Also the material of the walls, initially the designer was interested in using reflective metal surface but she realized that the stucco in white bounces light much more. Creating animation sequence worked best to do it on site, the color she was seeing on her computer monitor was quite different in person so she spent about 2 weeks on site programming the sequence. Latest led mapping technology allowed her to just plug-in an ethernet cable to the laptop to control the whole system.
CHALLENGE: The designer wanted to cover the whole tunnel with light but there was a limited budget that she had to work within. As well it had to be practical in the high traffic area. Those limitations made her come up a design that's less is more, though color can be changed to anything by each pixels, it turned out to be a very flexible for creating infinite iterations of looks and feel that matches time of the day and seasons.
