| DESIGN NAME: Otto Baby Feeder PRIMARY FUNCTION: Baby feeder INSPIRATION: Having three children, I found the weaning stage with each of them difficult for a variety of reasons. We created Otto the Octopus as I felt that there is need for a feeding system that met the demands of weaning children and the busy lifestyles that parents lead. My background in physiology and nutrition combined with a passion for food and healthy living inspired me to try to make a positive difference for busy parents, saving them both the time and stress of ensuring their child has had a fulfilling mealtime. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Otto the Octopus is the first complete feeding system for weaning a baby. It has been specially designed to accompany a child through all stages of weaning. A range of adjustable spouts have been created to grow with the childs confidence with food textures. The unique octopus design is loved by toddlers, who enjoy the independence of being able to feed themselves when feeding from a spoon is difficult. Otto is versatile and copes with both fresh and cooked foods or liquids. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The operation of the baby feeder is very simple. The parent fills food (either freshly made or from a ready made jar) into the main chamber, attaches a spout and closes the feeder. Then the child can either feed themselves by sucking, or the parent can gently feed the child by pushing the food with a plunger. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project concept phase started in 2014 in London. We developed the product with the help of a specialist Design company based in Cheltenham throughout 2014 to 2016. We finally started Marketing activities and planning a Kickstarter campaign in 2017 with a Marketing and Crowdsourcing specialist based in Worcester. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The baby feeder is made of durable plastic, produced to ISO9001 and to food hygiene standards. Each Otto set comes with a main chamber, a plunger set, 1 spout (additional spouts are available for different stages of weaning), a masher, 1 leak proof cover for the spout. It is designed to be used with children for ages 4 months and up. Otto the Octopus is Microwave, Dishwasher and Freezer proof SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Length 200 mm (fully assembled) Diameter 60mm (food chamber) TAGS: weaning, baby feeder, spout, baby food, mashing, toddler, early stage food RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The baby feeder was tested at various stages of design and prototyping. We engaged a number of parents with children between 4 months and 2 years, showed them the baby feeder and let them experiment themselves. We also took advice from health and nutrition professionals, including a dentist. CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the design was to ensure that the baby feeder was practical to use whilst remaining attractive to children to stimulate their desire to be fed. When we finally came up with design of multiple spouts with varying textures and openings we knew we had cracked one of the most difficult challenges.
