DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Shanghai Library Innovation Space

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Space

INSPIRATION:
Since its opening to the public in May 2013, the Innovation Space has been in service for over 4 years. It has always been attentive to what the users want by adjusting the literature configurations, adding various kinds of software and improving the content. In the meanwhile, The team hopes to offer user experience feedback for the Innovation Space from the readers' perspective, making it an excellent case of users participating in the transformation and application of the library space.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Future Learning Experience of Public Area is a project based on human centred thinking that covers every aspect of the Shanghai Library Innovation Space. The purpose of the redesign lies in making knowledge come alive and flow freely so that users can experience in the Space what extends beyond the library. A more enriching learning experience for readers in turn testifies to librarians’ greater role in this process.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
1. Human centred survey on innovation. From the perspective of users and librarians, the 5E method is adopted to interpret the experience, including Entice, Enter, Engage, Exit and Extend. 2. Customized course design. Establish an innovation learning platform for both the internal and the external. Based on people's database, the innovation team can design courses that most of them feel highly interested in. 3. Establishment of a unique platform. Innovation team will work closely with lecturers to design the content and class format, e.g. lecture, workshop etc. to give participants the most immersive experience.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in early 2017 in Shanghai, China and finished the first round of design part in February 2018, and will be exhibited at Shanghai Library Innovation Space by the end of March 2018 and also shown in Venice Design 2018 in the end of May.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The team applies design thinking methodology from the perspectives of both users and librarians to reframe some key questions, do brainstorming, conduct interviews, seek for inspirations globally and locally, search analogies examples and understand the real challenges. It helps the team to figure out the right design brief we could start with. In general, the method of the project includes 5 main sections: Inspiration, Research, Ideation, Prototyping and Refinement. Each section is not a linear step but an interwoven organic mechanism which affects other sections directly/indirectly.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Human centred design thinking is applied in reconsidering the Space's market positioning, organizational structure, user experience and space, which takes innovation in all directions to a new level by not only satisfying users' needs but also enhancing library staff's value in the larger context of transformative development. When the project is completed, the team has learned to put people first and leverage design thinking to maximize the value of the design process, skills which allow them to make further changes to the design of the Space in the future.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
A survey of users and librarians highlights the need to establish a more distinctly defined value proposition, deal with the incompatibility and interaction between different areas or sections, improve the design to meet the actual needs of users and librarians, enhance librarians' services and interact with users in more varied forms.

CHALLENGE:
The Space has always been the benchmark in the exploration of innovation space for Chinese libraries. Yet in face of market change, consumer trade-up, industrial transformation and technological advances, it has to reposition itself in order to maintain its leading role in the practice of library innovation by delivering better experience for both its users and librarians through culture rebuilding, all the while following the Shanghai Library's mission of "providing excellent knowledge services".

Shanghai Library - Innovation Space

PROFILE:
Since its opening to the public in May 2013, the Innovation Space has been in service for over 4 years. During its operation for the last few years, the Readers' Service Center of Shanghai Library has always been attentive to what the users want by adjusting the literature configurations, adding various kinds of software and improving the content of the activities in accordance with their needs. In the meanwhile, Prof. Sheng-Hung Lee hope to offer user experience feedback for the Innovation Space from the readers' perspective, making it an excellent case of users participating in the transformation and application of the library space. Prof. Sheng-Hung Lee has been teaching product design at Fudan University Shanghai Institute of Visual Art for three years, and has gained insights in the planning and design of the overall innovation space. His design has helped the Innovation Space conduct some initial investigations and service design research, which may hopefully be used in the actual space and service design and provide reference for the building of new space in the library and other theme libraries in the future.
