DESIGN NAME: Fyrn Stemn
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Flat pack furniture
INSPIRATION: The Stemn Series is Fyrn's debut line of furniture and the foundation for a broader system that aims to change the way people relate to and value the objects they choose for their homes, hopefully, inspiring a move away from disposable culture. The design of Stemn was inspired by thinking about how to create a scalable manufacturing process in the US, specifically the Bay Area, that would allow for high-end furniture to ship easily, making it more accessible to more people.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The secret to the Stemn Series is courtesy of the custom Stemn bracket - an exposed piece of hardware that enables strong, high-end furniture that can ship flat and assemble at home without sacrificing strength or durability. All seating is customizable by the wood finish, bracket color, and upholstery, making them versatile enough to fit a multitude of design environments. Developed in-house, the Stemn packaging focuses on making home assembly as intuitive and satisfying as the product itself.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Stemn solves challenges plaguing the furniture industry: inventory is stored in component parts eliminating the need for huge warehouses, the furniture is very high-quality & ships flat - allowing quick lead times and a reduced carbon footprint, thoughtful design and intuitive packaging create an enjoyable assembly, the furniture is 100 percent repairable not disposable, and proprietary parts and manufacturing processes enable local production without exploiting workers or the planet’s resources.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January of 2012 in San Francisco, CA. Prototypes were initially tested in restaurant environments in the Bay Area beginning in 2014. After many design iterations and further development, the product became publicly available for sale in January of 2017. It was presented at ICFF in New York in May of 2017. Extensions of the line utilizing the same hardware and system are currently underway, some of which will be debuted at ICFF in New York in May, 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Fyrn Stemn is a system of hardware, parts, and pieces using the strength of metal while maintaining the warmth of wood and upholstery. Rather than conceal the structural joints that connect the furniture, the exposed patented brackets create a unique signature aesthetic element. The anodized aluminum brackets allow the furniture to be built rapidly using very small amounts of North American hardwoods. To achieve scalable manufacturing in SF, Fyrn also designed and built proprietary equipment.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Developed through an iterative design process, the objectives were to create a line of furniture built to last a lifetime, easy to warehouse & ship, fun to assemble, repairable and sustainable. Digital modeling preceded prototypes tested for strength thru controlled methods. Collected data was compared by graphs and the bracket evolved with more than 30 iterations. Pilot builds in busy restaurants further proved durability. Surveys and focus groups were conducted to develop and refine the assembly process.
CHALLENGE: Producing a high-quality, durable and timeless product close to home was challenging. Ros’s family history of craft informed the design, including his grandfather’s part in reviving production of the Hitchcock Chair. Maintaining the slim frame of the furniture was both important and a huge design challenge. A second was developing an assembly experience that connected the buyer to Fyrn’s process and changed the perception of the quality of flatpack furniture (a huge hurdle created by IKEA).
