DESIGN NAME: Mikado
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential furniture
INSPIRATION: Close your eyes and go back in time. Go back to your childhood and to your favourite places. Imagine how it felt to be that young and free. Remember your favourite games and the joy of just being there, playing, no worries. Those memories are the motto for Mikado, a playful line of furniture that reminds us of simple games in a simple word. These objects are meant not only to make you smile every time you look at them, but also to make your house or even your business different and original. Take our advice: do not get too serious: stay playful.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Although fun to look at, Mikado hides the complexity of its well-thought construction and the art needed to make it perfect. Tubes of steel, copper and brass, which reminds the Mikado sticks, are cut in very precise angles and fit with great accuracy in the furniture providing the much-needed support. The theme is repeated in a delicate design on the top surfacee of the object, combining different types of wood and metals chosen by the author according to the taste and imagination of each client.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This line of furniture is what it is needed to make the difference. It is enough. It is the element one must crave for to add that special touch in decorating a house. It will not leave anyone indifferent: loved or hated, but surely noticed. It will make people remember old times and smile. However, there are some secrets to this. The heights of the sticks can be adjusted and used plain and simple or, if you take the stick caps, as a vase for flowers, in fact, eight vases. The grand table and the display case can also be used in commercial situations, like a hotel or a store in order to display important objects.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This line of furniture began its design in March 2017, in Porto, Portugal. After several prototypes and the tuning of special tools to assure that all the pieces would have the right quality and feel, the line was ready to production in December 2017. The final models were concluded in early January 2018 and presented at Maison et Objet in Paris in January the same year.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: First of all, it should be highlighted that there are several items inspired by Mikado, the game. However, those items are not bold enough, so it was a conscious decision to take its design to the limit. After the initial concept, the question was if it were possible and functional. Experimenting with different angles and materials, making it look easy, fun and delicate was the real challenge. The motto is More than function and that is exactly what happens here. This is not just another well-made line of furniture. Its purpose is to function but also to connect, to remember and to stand from the crowd.
CHALLENGE: There were two main challenges. The first one was in terms of creativity, meaning that this line would not be similar to any other already existing in the market. The second challenge was in terms of production: finding the precise angles that made it a different piece of furniture, while assuring it to be sturdy and functional. Mikado was just like sculpting: cutting pieces of metal in odd angles, making them part of the wood, like inseparable and continuous pieces, and never forgetting its real inspiration and function.
