DESIGN NAME:
Interventions

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residential House

INSPIRATION:
The challenge was to design the interior of a residential house in a mountain winter destination, to renew the way one experiences mountainside residential design in Greece, avoiding the traditional chalet cliches. The design strategy was to combine rustic wood and traditional methods of construction with textures commonly found in industrial design, to mix contemporary urban design with a more natural touch and place it in a beautiful green landscape.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
In this case of redesigning the interior of a chalet (Original construction: D n C design and construction c.o., Architects team: Vagelis Chatzis, Roula Kotsilati), Kokosalaki Architecture was asked to intervene in an existing awarded building and revisit the idea of mountainside design, in order to counterbalance the dynamic design of the existing exterior with a new interior that combines modern materials within a more rustic context. In sum, we considered our design to be on an empty shell, altering the original plans and modifying some of the openings in order to frame the spectacular view of the forest better and to create cozy window seats. The residence is 150 sq.m. and situated on the side of Mount Parnassos, at the edge of the forest, with an unlimited view of the valley to the south. The house is comprised of three levels and is covered by a mono-pitched roof. On the lower level are the bedrooms, bath and sauna. On the ground level, where the main entrance is, living area and kitchen are situated but also a second more private sitting area that is organized around the fireplace. On top of the ground level stands an open plan mezzanine, used as an extra bedroom or a study room. Our design vision was a contemporary yet warm space that will respect the existing shell and integrate well with the extraordinary surroundings. The concept was to elaborately combine natural materials - like rustic woodwork - with finishes and textures typically used for more industrial design. We wanted to mix the typology of an urban loft with the traditional chalet. Mixing the openness and versatility of an urban space filled with natural daylight with the warmth and traditional look a hub in the mountain aspires. Perforated corten steel, laser cut metal work, wood grid and 3D mosaic tiling were some of the main features in the house. A minimal kitchen featuring floor-to-ceiling cupboards, eroded re-used metal sheets, black lacquered finishes combined with rustic pine wood. A thin metal stairway leads from the living room to the loft. The perforated corten steel sheets are a lightweight divider between the two levels, while allowing the light to pass through the uneven circular cross-section holes. At night, when the mezzanine space is lit, it diffuses soft light through the perforation to the entire space like a giant lighting fixture. The bathrooms were also design with a minimal touch, combining cement style tiles, 3D mosaic tiling with super modern fittings, always with a constant presence of wood. All furniture and lighting were also part of the interior proposal.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Modified windows allowed for better interaction between the interior and exterior spaces, providing spectacular views of the surrounding forest and valley to the south. A perforated corten steel ribbon that wraps around the mezzanine acts as an optical divider whilst also acting as a filter for diffuse light. The rusty color blends well with the wooden floors and structural timber frame.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The redesign of this mountain retreat on Mount Parnassos in Greece started in 2016 and was completed in 2017.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Laser cut and perforated sheets of corten steel were used extensively throughout the project.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Residence is 150 square meters.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Research included material testing in order to produce the weathered finish we desired for the corten steel, and perforation dimensions for providing the privacy yet transparency required.

CHALLENGE:
The main challenge was how to use modern industrial technologies such as laser cutting steel in contrast, yet in harmony, with natural materials and timber construction methods in order to design the interior of a cozy yet contemporary mountain residence. Furthermore, Greece is known for it's seaside architecture, such as summer houses in the Cyclades, where designers combine contemporary design with local practices and elements. We had to translate this idea to the atypical Greek mountain landscape for a winter residence.
