DESIGN NAME: H2.O
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Drinking Water ATM
INSPIRATION: H2.O uses proprietary German technology to provide arsenic-free drinking water to local schools in the Indian Ganges delta, where such natural contamination causes serious health hazards. The design of H2.O is centered around giving this intimidating technology a human face for use in schools and ownership by local communities. The approach was to bring in magnificence into the design, through fine detailing, exquisite engineering, and careful massing of highly reflective and matte surfaces.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: H2.O is a Water ATM, a unique format designed to bring technologies used in large water treatment plants, to schools and small communities living with unsafe water. The design language of “serious play” combines play with technology, humanizing the robust and powerful aesthetic. Locking mechanisms for critical components make it tamper and vandal proof. Features like part-openable side panels, gas spring hinges for easy access to electronics add to the functionality of the product.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Product ergonomics have been thought from user as well as assembly and service points of view. H2.O comes with a push type water dispenser to get water with minimum effort. The nozzle is designed as per ergonomic parameters of height and distance, taking the target user’s needs into consideration.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2014 in Mumbai, India. The product was launched in the Indian market in February 2015. Over 200 units of the product have been successfully deployed at public schools in the eastern part of India, where contaminated drinking water is a major health hazard. The first set of machines was installed in Kolkata, where it was reported to be a big success.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design was preceded by field research in relevant areas, so as to understand the contextual problems, deployment options and ergonomic requirements of target users.
CHALLENGE: The context of public schools and small communities posed several challenges in terms of ergonomics, tamper-proofing, weather-proofing, ease of deployment and maintenance. Moreover, it was important to instill pride of ownership, to ensure the community continued its maintenance.
