DESIGN NAME: Petalis
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sound Amplifier
INSPIRATION: The use of sound at interior spaces stays in the background while designing the houses. However, the demand for electronics related to the sound, such as intelligent home assistants is getting increased. Petalis is an aesthetic solution to the constructional inefficacy of sound use in interiors. The idea of creating a small-scale home theatre had motived the project. The working principles of the concert hall roof designs and the concentrate acoustic mirrors have been inspirational and informational sources for this product.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Petalis is a decorative wall unit which works as the acoustic mirror. It is aimed to direct the sound which is coming from the sound source. There are six leaves at different angles to amplify the indoor sound experience. The proper combination of the pieces will gather the reflected sound and transfer to the narrowed and focused space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: All pieces should be hung considering the area which is going to have the reflected sound. The location of the sound source and the geometry of the interior space will guide which leaf piece should be used in that particular area. The position of leaves should be determined as circularly. The holder piece which is same for all leaves should be hung by a screw. The angle is so important for the next hanging operation. The holder piece and leaf's hanging parts are shrinking fit each other. The leaves could be slipped into the holder with using a mallet.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in July 2017 and finished in November 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: All of the six leaves and the holder piece are designed to manufacture by casting. The aluminum is the suitable material to reflect sound by courtesy of its density. In order to prevent the rattling, a rubber gasket could be put between the leaf piece and the holder piece.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Each leaf has 10 mm of thickness. Widths and heights are; 480 x 280, 290 x 330, 210 x 390, 250 x 260, 250 x 315, 250 x 380 (all measures are indicated by millimeter). Weights of the leaves are approximately 2,7 kg, 2,6 kg, 2,0 kg, 1,8 kg, 1,7 kg, 1,5 kg.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The quantitative research is used. The questions of how do the sound spread, how does the sound wave reflects, how could the existing solutions be applied to the product will be designed were main objectives in this project. The case study research approach is adopted with strategic, applied and action research activities. The literature review was made. The importance of the parabolic surface was learned as an outcome of the research while seeking for forms and shapes. The design is finalized with the proper sizes and measurements.
CHALLENGE: The biggest obstacle to the project was choosing the accurate material. In order to get a continuous and euphonious reflection, the material should be rigid, has a finishable surface and dense enough to reflect sound waves. The project had been steered by the material choice.
