DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Viupax

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Footwear packaging

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration came from the need of being able to see shoe availability on shoe stores. The current sohe boxes makes imposible to see if a shoe design is available on yor size. On top of that, the apparel industry is the second largest polluter so sustainability was the second most important factor.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Viupax is a one of a kind footwear packaging that is way more sustainable than the current shoe boxes. Each year over 20bln shoe pairs ar produced and are transported around the world. Viupax cost less, uses 20-50% less paper and occupies 20-57% less volume during shoe transportation. It help brands become more sustainable and if adapthed by the industry can improve the environmental impact of footwear brands considering that the apparel industry is the second largest polluter.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
UX: • The consumer can identify by himself in no time if the shoe pair is available on his size. • The salesman need no more to memorize names and models to find either on racks or stockrooms the shoe model. Can easily carry upto 8boxes while moving around with the smart hole placement on the box way more than what can carry with the traditional shoe boxes. • The open system allows the use of printed electronics, arduino etc. for limited editions Sustainability (compared to traditional shoe boxes): • Uses 20-50% less paper • Occupies 20-57% less volume • Can be trasnformed into toys , extending shoe box lifecycle • Can be transformed into hand carry bag with the build-in handle, eliminating the use of plastic or paper bags Financial: • Production cost at least 20% less compared to traditional shoe boxes • Radical cost reduction for shoe transportation and storage as Viupax occupies 20-57% less volume • Radical cost reduction as it can be converted into a hand carry bag eliminating the need of paper or plastic bags

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Our research was based in collecting shoe boxes from top notch brands on all sizes. A dieline was designed for wach one and a sustainability analysis was conducted for each size and brand to identify waste and savings on material used and transportation. Patent search was also conducted prior to filling international patents.

CHALLENGE:
The most challenging part was to design a strong structural packaging that allow the shoes to be safely transported around the world and be able to converted to a hand carry bag with the same packaging closure without the use of tape. Many strength and drop tests were made.
