DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Grosvenor Hong Kong

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Workplace Office

INSPIRATION:
Bean Buro responded with a design that integrated art and semiotics. The research involved the reading into the history of Jardine House, its historical tea trading activities in the neighbourhood, and the iconic circular windows of Jardine House as a symbol of well being. Circular architectural forms were once used in many oriental tea gardens as a symbol of tranquility and nature.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Bean Buro was tasked with refurbishing a workplace at the iconic Jardine House building in Hong Kong of approx. 5,000 sqft, to transform the dated office space into an innovative workspace that would reflect the company ethos for quality, integrity and social responsibility. The workplace is to be open plan with some flexible seating, but with a variety of support spaces such as formal meeting rooms, collaboration rooms, focus rooms, and well being rooms.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The ethos of the project is oriented around people, hence much of the design priorities have been driven by the day to day user experiences and wellbeing, rather than by the typical status driven approach for a company organisation. To heighten the sense of community, a proper art gallery was designed at the entrance reception with high quality art that engages all the employees and visitors, allowing everybody to appreciate art.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in March 2017 in Hong Kong and finished in October 2017.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The conceptual narrative has driven the design with a series of unique joinery elements, such as the collaboration tables for employees in the open plan that have acoustic fabric in a circular shape installed at each table end, as well as the rounded edging details of the meeting tables in the boardrooms.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The reception was designed as an art gallery, featuring contemporary art by Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst and Nam June Paik. The art pieces serve as important interventions that would engage with people and space. These in turn nurtures a better company culture that is non hierarchical but driven by the people in the workplace. The narrative of the circles also created a strong identity and emotional engagement within the space.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The art pieces serve as important interventions that would engage with people and space. These in turn nurtures a better company culture that is non hierarchical but driven by the people in the workplace. The narrative of the circles also created a strong identity and emotional engagement within the space. The workplace is fully utilised and equipped with human-comfort designs to create a more productive and working environment that feels good. Employees from the open plan can choose to work in a variety of spaces, such as the informal focus rooms, phone booths, and pantry cafe.

CHALLENGE:
Employees would be able to choose from a variety of spaces on offer to them within the workplace. Acoustic and lighting designs, and the environmental strategy would be the key drivers for creating a project that priorities highly on wellbeing and sustainability. This was an ethos that would drive the entire design and construction process.

CLIENT/STUDIO/BRAND DETAILS
NAME:
Bean Buro

PROFILE:
The studio is an emerging architecture and interiors practice from London and Paris, led by Lorène Faure and Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui, with a team of international designers to provide architecture, interior, installation, furniture, product and masterplanning design services. The Hong Kong studio was opened in mid 2013. The diversity of the practice with its collaborators reinforces a core vision for the practice: to respond to the exchanges of global cultural development factors, incorporating overlapping design disciplines in the social, economical and technological production of urban spaces. With a strong believe in architecture being an emotional, spatial experience produced by both the user and the author, the design methodology involves the observation, speculation and analysis of contextual narratives. These narratives, or ‘stories’, generate dynamic exchanges of forces, resulting in inventive interventions inherent with humanistic delights. The practice has since produced a string of successful architecture and interior projects for reputable developers such as Grosvenor, Nan Fung Group and Sun Hung Kai, as well as commercial companies such as Uber, Leo Burnett, Warner Music, Kerry Logistics, and has been nominated for The Prodigy INDE. Awards 2017, 3 nominations in Archdaily Architecture Awards China 2017, awarded Silver Winner in the Asia Pacific Interior Design Award 2015, Runner Up in Architizer A+ Awards 2015, multiple Gold and Silver awards in the A’ Design Awards in three consecutive years, and Finalist Winner of the 13th Modern Decoration International Media Award. The studio has a rigorous methodology in research by design, using high quality drawings and models that explore cultural narratives and the humanistic aspects of design. The works have been featured in Archdaily awards, Interior Design NYC, ID+C, Design Anthology, ELLE, Perspective, Domus, FRAME and Wallpaper* Magazine.
