DESIGN NAME: IO Doodle Box
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mobile Art Storage
INSPIRATION: IO Doodle Box was inspired by a personal desire to create an engaging piece of furniture that would encourage and support my children's love and interest in arts and crafts. We also wanted to create a versatile product for parents who don’t necessarily have a dedicated room or an area for their kids to enjoy painting and drawing activities.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: IO Doodle Box is a portable storage unit designed to accommodate children’s interest in drawing and creating. The unit has integrated wheels to allow kids to easily move it around and a removable tray for drawing and painting accessories to ensure that materials are always to hand. When not in the art mode the unit doubles as a bench seat with internal storage for art work. The piece accommodates a roll of paper which when pulled over the lid creates an easel or a drawing board. Once the child grows out of it parents can continue using it as a side table with practical storage.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: IO Doodle Box is an on the go arts and crafts unit designed to be easily manoeuvred and simply operated. This is achieved with a combination of 20cm integrated laminated plywood wheels, a slender handle and feet section made from a single piece of plywood, and a simple, openable lid, fixed with a single, continuous piano hinge and an integrated storage tray that also supports the structure for the lid. Inside, an integrated paper role hold is fixed and aligned with a continuous side slot to feed the paper from inside to out. The IO Doodle Box is held firmly together with dowels and glue, while the integrated wheels are connected by a steel axel and bearing mechanism allowing for smooth travel.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The product started in London in 2012 and took 6 months to complete from an initial idea to its completion and launch. The piece was first exhibited at Design Junction in London during London Design Week in 2012.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: IO Doodle box was conceived with sustainable thinking applied to its design. The piece allows children to use it in many different ways and for different purposes to encourage their creativity whenever the mood to create strikes. Scandinavian birch plywood was chosen as the main material because of its strength, warmth and durability. The added layer of laminate provides extra protection making the piece more resilient and durable. IO Doodle Box was made combining skilled, local craftsmanship with the latest cnc technology. Throughout the design process we consulted safety regulations and collaborated with Fira to ensure that our design complies with relevant UK and European safety regulations.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Scandinavian Birch Plywood and High Pressure Laminate with exposed edges

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our aim was to create an interactive and space saving piece of furniture to encourage children’s interest in arts and crafts. We carried out initial research and observed children during numerous arts and crafts sessions to better understand how our design can best address their needs. Our first prototype was given to children of different ages in order to observe how the product can be used by different age groups. Research into safety regulations was carried out throughout the design process which resulted in close collaboration with Fira testing facility and the creation of a product that complies with UK and European safety regulations.
CHALLENGE: Our aim was to create a piece of furniture that would be able to effortlessly perform different functions and yet still be cost effective to manufacture. We also wanted to create a product which would appeal to both kids and grown up aesthetic and offer multiple uses for both children and adults. The challenge was to combine all these different objectives into a single design and at the same time creatively resolve technical aspects in order to keep the cost of production down as well as preserve the integrity of our vision throughout the design process.
