DESIGN NAME: The Italian Loft
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House
INSPIRATION: The project lasts one year with the goal, strongly requested by the owner, to not alter the original volumes softening the basic space with precious elements and materials.
The only link with the past stands in the use of iron as a structural and decorative element, often visible, becoming the link with the industrial complex past.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As from the time of purchase the owner immediately senses the potential of this space, albeit crude, with 5 meters high ceilings and full of natural light, but, as often happens, decanted his vision for more than a year before planning a radical renovation. The main reason resides in the fact that he did not want an industrial aesthetic, but, starting from scratch, he wanted to adapt it to his functional and aesthetic needs.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project moves away from the Anglo Saxon vision of loft and proposes a new language close to the Italian lifestyle.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in march 2008 in Milano and finished in january 2009. It was published on Architectural Digest AD Italian Edition in april 2009.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The space has been renovated, using traditional brick masonry and carpentry with iron profiles. The decoration and furnishings are the result of a close collaboration of skilled artisans in the Milan area.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The space is 250 squared meters, 5 meters high.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research of vemworks has ranged from architecture, industrial design, craftwork and art, providing this project in which these disciplines are merged achieving innovative outcomes. Within the planning journey, hand made and the research for innovative solutions play an essential aspect to define unique settings, far from standards and archetypes.
CHALLENGE: In Milan, in the Sempione area, on the ruins of an old metallurgical plant, where disused old factories blend within Old Milano buildings, this 250 sqm loft project took life. Surely the space suggested several possible pleasant outcomes, therefore designers called to rethink that old rustic plant, accepted the challenge with great enthusiasm, confident to be working with a very stimulating client, unbiased and attentive.
