| DESIGN NAME: R2300 Series PRIMARY FUNCTION: Space saving bathroom accessories INSPIRATION: A bathroom of Japanese apartment is prefabricated unit and very small by an average of 4 square meter. We aimed to produce sanitary accessory which would fit to the space. That means to keep its function and do not inhibit opening and closing a door, having enough space to move around inside of a bathroom. Generally square shaped design would fit it. But we wanted to bring soft atmosphere within the bathroom. We divided each surface of our products finely by adjusting irregularities in detail and realized it by using round form and smooth curve. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: After many research of bath toiletry supplies, the most of Japanese bath toiletry supply companies provide either authentic classical shaped products or modern sharp designed products. We simply wonder why there are no modern soft shape designed products for a bathroom where it is for relaxation. We tried to make the product which could bring a feeling of relaxation. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In order to realize complicated curved surfaces of the products, it is mandatory to check the whole shape of the product with a three dimensional printer. While keeping a balance of beauty with the design, we pay special attention to safety in the bathroom with the design and functionality. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2017 in Tokyo and finished in March 2018. It took 10 months to complete design and production. The product will be officially introduced into the market in June 2018. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: It was technically difficult to realize this project due to space limitation in a bathroom. Round form design tends to be bigger than squared shape. But we could not allow making them bigger. We used the latest CAD system which can help adjustment in 0.1 mm increments for each parts of design. This design looks simple, but in fact, a surface is divided more than four although it looks like having only one. It is difficult to polish the complicated form with several surfaces. Therefore, we have developed new polishing tool for this product. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Towel bar W 450 D 70.25 H 23.25 mm, Towel ring W 200 D 52 H 23 mm, Toilet paper holder W 146 D 104 H 72 mm , mainly made of zinc die casting plated in chrome finish and polished stainless steel. All products are easily mounted to the wall by using electric drill only instead of using Allen key for tightening. Also, the roll bar of toilet paper holder is changeable in its direction at the sites in case the toilet is installed inappropriate position against installation of the toilet paper holder. As a result, the product became user friendly for both installers and end users. Especially installation time per item is drastically reduced. In our daily life, toilets and bathrooms are taking a role as both physically cleansing and spiritually relaxing. This research is concentrated in exploring an idea of generating a feeling of soft atmosphere in the bathroom for a large scale project by uniting easy installation and the modern soft design of bathroom accessory. CHALLENGE: Our challenge was to bring the design exactly the same into the mass production. Then, it has been accomplished by developing a specialized tool for buffing. Another challenge was to have one smooth curve over the complicated surface of the product. We have also successfully cleared this by producing samples repeatedly more than four times.
