DESIGN NAME: Hydra Resistance Trainer
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Swimming Resistance Trainer
INSPIRATION: The HYDRA was designed keeping one goal in mind, providing a modern swimming specific resistance training machine which can be operated while being inside the water.
The state of art of swimming equipment is only limited to paddles, fins, parachutes and currently the power tower
I saw the athletes move and position the machine by trial and error and working their way through the bad experience which got me inspired to do something in that area and design new equipment for the same purpose.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Swimming specific strength training is proved to be more effective than working out in a gym and then applying it in the swimming pool. HYDRA is a modern full body resistance training machine for swimmers. It is the first of its kind machine designed specifically for competitive swimmers who need swimming specific muscle building. It primarily works similar to a water rower unit which contains a turbine and a water chamber to provide resistance when the belt is driven by the swimming athlete.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Hydra trainer is a resistance training machine in which the swimmer ties the harness to his/her waist and swims while pulling it which in turn rotates the turbine in the chamber against water to provide resistance while swimming. The swimmer can swim a whole 25 yds lap while having external resistance which can be changed to their training needs while seeing workout data on a ergometer display
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in fall 2016 in Raleigh,NC USA and ended in Fall 2017 in Raleigh, NC USA

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Water resistance is one of the natural and smoothest ways of providing resistance and for a swimming scenario it fitted perfectly well. The aesthetic appeal of the water resistance was equally impressive as the functionality as it was a sense of calmness and serenity which the users felt while using the water rowing machines. The resistance can be changed by the athlete from the inside of the pool via a lever which allows him/her to focus on the training and exercise rather than operating a machine.
The ergo meter display provides information like speed, distance, energy and total time to the user along with other programs like fastest lap and strongest set. This kind of feedback is a first in the world of swimming and will revolutionize the way competitive swimmers training.Aluminum is a corrosion resistant material hence was ideal for the frame design.
The frame shape was inspired from simple but functional geometry which allowed the whole machine to be just tilted enough to make the wheels touch the ground and help move the unit. The single aluminum frame allows the connections and joints to be open and easy to be repaired without having extra parts to be disassembled.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I saw the athletes move and position the machine by trial and error and working their way through the bad experience which was documented by video and later reviewed the videos to get insights
The research started with looking at different resistance techniques and trying to compare the pros and cons of all to select an appropriate one for the purpose. Using gravity as a resistance needs a lot of height to the product which makes it big. Techniques like magnetic/eddy current, air and water have been used in many modern gym machines as a method of resistance which are cheap and have a smaller footprint. Water resistance units contains a turbine and a water chamber which contains water. When the turbine is driven by the athlete it rotates against this water which provides resistance while rotating. Water resistance is one of the natural and smoothest ways of providing resistance and for a swimming scenario it fitted perfectly well. The aesthetic appeal of the water resistance was equally impressive as the functionality as it was a sense of calmness and serenity which the users felt while using the water rowing machines.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this activity was designing for the swimmer swimming in the pool. Ensuring the design was catered to be on the swimming pool where water is always spilling as well as making it aesthetically pleasing was a design challenge.Selecting method of resistance was a challenge too as typically magnetic resistance is cheaper and works better but water resistance which provides natural resistance was selected in spite of being costlier.
