DESIGN NAME: Köllen Bookshelf
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional shelf
INSPIRATION: The shelf is inspired on the Nordic style, either in matter of its name, Kollen, which is Swede for Alps or the materials and shapes used. The former is essentially natural and uses light tones with shades of white. The shapes represent the mountains, in a nod to the piece's originary region.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Kollen Bookshelf consists on a shelf created from the repetition of adaptable pieces in matter of size and shape of the objects on it. The innovation proposed with this product consists on the introduction of the concepts of dynamism and adaptability to the field of design furniture. Namely, it generates an interaction between the product and the user, allowing the creation of different compositions with just a simple movement.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The product is formed by pieces with an independent working, which allow them to have two possible positionings according to the objects placed. The horizontal disposition allows the disposal of objects, acting simultaneously as shelves or as a hangers. On the other hand, the vertical disposition allows the disposal of larger objects on the lower shelves or acts as a decorative component.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After considering what design is and how it arises in the field of furniture, we observed that there exists the need of creating new solutions that meet nowadays needs. We reached the final design by doing research on new arising habits in our society and studying the interaction and relationship established between people and objects.
The main creative challenge and the internal objective of our team was innovating in the field of furniture design (usually formed by products with a fixed and rigid structure) and to introduce the concepts of dynamism and adaptability in this field. In this sense, Kollen Bookshelf generates an interaction between the product and the user, at the same time that accomplishes with two functions (can be both used as a shelf and as a hanger). Indeed, it is also modular decorative element that allows having an active home decoration.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge of the project was generating an interactive system for a furniture piece made of a rigid material, wood. Once we knew we wanted to design a shelf with a dynamic structure which could be changed of position by a simple movement and without the need of using any tool, we started prototyping with different types of wood and rotating systems, until we reached the final design. The system designed allows having two different positions for each of the pieces while maintaining them fixed when are on its vertical position and not breaking the continuity of the product shape.
