DESIGN NAME: Kopp
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Restaurant and bar
INSPIRATION: Kopp in local Goan language means a glass of a drink. Whirlpool formed by stirring a drink in a glass was visualised as a focal point while designing this project. Limited budget for the project lead designers to think out of the box. Fibonacci curve being the base of a whirlpool it was created with the help of a module of recycled PVC drainage pipes and the Y bends. Use of Drainage pipes continue on the outdoors as a feature to establish continuity from indoors to outdoors.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In a restaurant designers need to come up with unique concepts that can attract clientele. The interiors need to stay fresh and appealing with the future trends in design. Unconventional use of materials is one such way to keep patrons engaged with interior decor. Kopp is a restaurant that was designed with this thought. Unconventional use of drainage pipes for the interior decor is the uniqueness of this restaurant. It portrays the design philosophy of repetition of module to generate pattern.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The restaurant is at ground level of a commercial complex. It has an indoor as well as an outdoor area. Closed area hosts a bar counter and a kitchen that is visible to guests. The outdoor area is visible from indoors and has bright coloured decor. It creates a vibrant palate on a stark white canvas of interiors.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2017 in Pune India and got completed in November 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The base of design was to implement Fibonacci curve derived from the use of a module. Keeping central column as the base and wrapping ceiling around it was conceived by using a module of PVC drainage pipes and Y bends. Further the curve in horizontal as well as vertical plane was enhanced using curved panels of plywood cladded with veneer. Small size physical models were produced to get exact conical shape of a whirlpool to determine size and lengths of each module.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The restaurant is on the ground level of a commercial complex that host majority of Restaurants and office areas on the upper level. it has indoor space of 250 square meters and outdoor area of 100 square meters. Ceiling height is 4 meters.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The concept of whirlpool and formation of it with respect to mathematical formula was the base of research. Applying Fibonacci curve in three dimensions was needed to study in detail. Various data was collected from the internet to arrive at suitable formula for the implementation of concept. Small scale physical models were made along with various mock ups on site to achieve exact results.
CHALLENGE: Low budget and the time constraints lead designers to explore various materials Finally the designers concluded on using recycled PVC drainage pipes for the impact that was desired. The connections of pipes made it easy to repeat the modules but the challenge was the stability of these connected modules. It was taken care by introducing vertical curved panels in plywood. It not only enhanced the structural stability but also enhanced the entire form of the whirlpool.
