DESIGN NAME: Flow
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House
INSPIRATION: This design is to create physical 'circles', in which the inside and outside is flowing mutually. Through it, people living here can aware changes of a day in seasons and feel themselves in it.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The original solid facade in the South is now displaced by an addition of steel-glass structure. It defines a central courtyard of water with a cherry tree inside. This area becomes a new core from static to dynamic, where the outside view and the inside void generate a flowing ‘circle’. It also applies in the East. A 'valley’ is created here. The new picture window with glass door not only opens a view for the basement but also strings the inner circulation together.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This 20-year old villa is at the lakefront, surrounded by beautiful landscape in Shanghai. The essential concept of this renovation is to re-connect the access of the residents to the nature. The original solid facade in the South is now displaced by an addition of steel-glass structure. It defines a central courtyard of water with a cherry tree inside. This area becomes a new core from static to dynamic, where the outside view and the inside void generate a flowing ‘circle’. This Scientific Feng Shui design approach applies everywhere in the Flow House.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project is in Shanghai, China. The design started in September 2013 to 2015. The construction started from September 2014 and finished in October 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The original concrete stair looked very heavy and made the space dark. The new one is also made of concrete but created as a 3 dimensional fusiform and all the steps are not parallel. The craft of it is also challenging. The copper components start as the handrail but end as the edge of the steps. None of one piece is the same as others. The stair is completed by marquetry wood steps with LED inside and decorated with leather.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Site: 415 square meters/

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research Background: Feng Shui has always been an issue in residential design in Asian society.
Methods/ Tools: In a manner of Scientific Feng Shui.
Results and Insights: The structure of this U-shaped courtyard house was maintained. But the exterior walls, windows, doors are partly reconfigured and the main entrance is placed in the West to reverse the orientation. The courtyard becomes a new core from static to dynamic. Here the sunshine, advection and circulation are all considered.
CHALLENGE: The structure of its columns and beams were over-sized. It is a challenge when reconfiguring exterior facades and integrating lighting design with facilities. The use of oblique ceilings and sky windows can skillfully solve this problem.
