| DESIGN NAME: BuddyPhones Play PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wireless Headphones INSPIRATION: The UN recognizes play as a human right of every child, essential to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of youth. With the increased use of electronics, kids are playing on devices for a variety of reasons in a range of places and damaging their ears at alarming rates. While promoting the importance of play, we minimize the risk of noise-induced hearing loss by making it safe to play. We were inspired to keep kids ears safe, no matter what or where they need to play. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The BuddyPhones Play makes play time virtually endless thanks to a diverse range of features that enhance playfulness. The Play encourages creativity with sticker sets that allow kids to personalise their headphones; promotes physical activity thanks to wireless freedom and a long-lasting battery; equips listeners with four unique volume-limiting listening settings; and enhances cognitive development with StudyMode, a setting that optimizes vocals to help kids stay focused when playing to learn. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The BuddyPhones Play can be used wirelessly for over 14 hours, or anytime with the backup BuddyCable. The cable allows multiple listeners to share one device. To change between listening settings, users hold two fingers down on the volume buttons and wait for flashing LED lights to indicate the change. The PLAY performs better than standard kids headphones by catering to specific surroundings or ages. We included over 100 high-quality embossed metallic stickers to encourage personalisation. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2017 and finished in February 2018. Designs were initiated in Iceland, market research conducted in the USA, product testing and manufacturing in China, and business development based out of Hong Kong. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Part of the BuddyPhones Play core values is to make playtime safe, so we used only kid-safe materials like phthalate-free and BPA-free plastics, anti-allergic cushions, anti-pinch foldable joints and specially calibrated bendable polypropylene for maximum durability. The Play complies with key safety and environmental standards like ROHS, REACH and PROP65. We certified our product in first-tier global testing labs to ensure precision and high-quality results. TAGS: volume limiting, kids headphones, education, safe audio, headphones, listening settings, StudyMode RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Instead of treating kids headphones as simplified adult products, we devote all R&D to addressing kids’ unique listening needs. We identified a market gap for cost-competitive wireless volume-safe headphones that kids could use for a full-range of listening situations, especially while playing to learn. We introduced unique features tested with kids and parents to improve listening experiences for young listeners in a fun way that teaches safe listening habits and encourages playfulness. CHALLENGE: We’re the first to introduce technology that allows for four listening settings with a user-friendly way to change between them, improving listening options beyond just one volume setting. We experimented and identified correct EQ adjustments to enhance vocals without sacrificing overall listening experience to create our pioneering StudyMode setting. The biggest challenge was to be the first in market to introduce relevant new features for kids headphones at an affordable cost for consumers.
