DESIGN NAME: Bridal Duden Waterfall
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Nature themed light art
INSPIRATION: Dancing fireflies, enormity of nature and a waterfall looking like a bride in a bridal dress. The beauty of this enormous waterfall which is one of the landmarks of the city is normally being revealed by the sun at daytime but its magical view should also be visible and shine with dancing fireflies in the dark after sunset. That's why nature always hugs its creatures and as part of Mother Nature, humans should be able to feel and remember this magic both in the day and in the night.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Water of Duden waterfall drops a rocky cliff directly into the Mediterranean Sea. It can be seen from the sea by taking a boat trip and land by walking around it. It was aimed to make this place visible at night to bring back the attraction of tourists without harming residents and natural structure. So, energy-efficient led lighting technology was used. A solar energy system was installed without any energy lines. An image was created reminiscent of living creatures making luminescence.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project was achieved to make the waterfall become the first point of attraction for domestic and foreign guests coming to Antalya by air. Two different type of lighting fixture was used; 64 big spots at 4 different places having time adjustment and computer control to illuminate it and many of decorative dot fixtures working by solar panels to create an image of fireflies dancing around a bride in darkness. Especially white colored light was preferred to reflect the innocence and purity.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was accomplished within 4 months (August to November 2015). It's now permanently visible at south east coast of Antalya province in Turkey. It was also declared by the local news sources.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In the project, only waterfall illumination was performed. Since the waterfall spreads over a large area, it is lit up by 72 led spots having one degree beam and 2500 smart solar dot fixtures with white color. They are time adjusted and special computer software controlled. They work using solar panels. Narrow-angle lens projectors were used. They were put into long guards not to glare the human eye.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: In the project, 2500 units of 180mm*150mm*26mm stainless steel body, solar energized smart dots were used for 5000 square meters of rocky area. Each solar dot has a 2400mAh lithium-ion battery and is controlled by a microprocessor. The Led spot tower is 140 meters away from the waterfall. The height is 4.2 meters and the width is 2 meters. It consists of 72 led spots. Each led spot has 15W power and dmx communication infrastructure. They can be precisely positioned on the tower, thanks to the adjustment knobs.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We wanted to bring other energy sources to an end by using renewable energy and escape the dependency on mains power. The lighting design should have broken the routine of standard illumination by including natural themes to present a light art show. We aimed to achieve continuity for the beauty of a natural structure with artificial illumination even at night. Thus, more touristic attraction and economic gain would be provided by making it a promotional symbol for the city.
CHALLENGE: The disadvantages of traditional lighting such as high energy consumption, being short-lived, less durable were overcome by led technology. The area is rocky and high, the installation was hard, so a mountaineer team helped. The purpose was always not to harm residents and natural structure which is also a challenging process, so no power cables were run and narrow-angle lenses were used in spots to create luminescence. Additionally, salty water and wave resistant products must have been used.
