DESIGN NAME: Dwimmer Nzinga Fein
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Neckwear for any gender
INSPIRATION: The necktie hasn't changed in a century, and it represents a traditional, masculine power dynamic which I feel is no longer relevant to today's culture. I decided to create neckwear for today, simple to wear and designed for every gender. I also want Dwimmer ties to inspire us to build a beautiful future. The Nzinga tie features a metallic bee design, and with each tie sold we donate to Planet Bee Foundation, an organization helping to save the bees. Each tie is named after a historic figure.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Dwimmer ties feature a patent pending method of tying secured by a metal accent piece. This makes them easy to tie and always the correct length. The ties are handcrafted in California and come in four different shapes and sizes. Rather than using the traditional construction of folded neckties, Dwimmer ties are double sided, giving them a smooth finish and a hint of contrast. The textiles are of the highest quality. Each tie also has a unique QR code to access the Dwimmer 'Secret Society.'
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Dwimmer ties arrive pre tied and are always the correct length. To put them on you simply loosen the neck, slip it over your head, cinch and adjust. Dwimmer has a pending patent on this new method of tying using a slot. Currently we manufacture four different shapes and sizes to fit a variety of customers, and we are always working on new designs.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Dwimmer started working on the tie design in Summer 2015 and began selling them online in January 2016. All the ties are made in the San Francisco Bay Area, California by our team.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The ties are individually embroidered, cut and sewn, turned inside out and then grommetted. The Nzinga Tie is made from a cotton and polyester textile designed and made by a mother-daughter team in France. The colors are custom chosen by Dwimmer. The back of the tie is made of a high end satin from England. Each tie features a unique QR code which can be found on the keeper. The tie wearer can access customized content by scanning the code. We built the backend for this passive IoT system using Ruby on Rails.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 38.1 cm length from neck to tip

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Designer Laurel Tincher began with the concept of creating a new tie for all genders, using a slot and a number of new shapes. Before perfecting the design, she surveyed twenty men and women from a variety of backgrounds, getting their take on the future of menswear, their opinions on neckties and what they're looking for in fashion. After narrowing in on the final styles and forming the Dwimmer brand, Tincher produced a private event for friends and family to test out the product. She conducted surveys, took photos and built up excitement around the brand at a Victorian mansion in San Francisco. Following the success of this event, Laurel wanted to add a modern take on the concept of a 'men's club,' she then hired CTO Zeth DuBois to develop the IoT component of the ties. The codes on the ties create a 'Dwimmer Secret Society' where customers can access special event invites, discounts for drinks at speakeasies and other global perks. Currently Dwimmer is building up partnerships with stores, speakeasies and influencers to increase awareness of the ties, in addition to their partnerships with organizations they donate to through the sales of certain designs.
CHALLENGE: It took many prototypes to perfect the construction of the ties, from their thickness and feel to the types of fabrics, the angle of the grommet to the method of turning them inside out after sewing. The patent process has been extensive and challenging, which has been surprising given such a seemingly simple product. As a family team with a background in design and craftsmanship, we always wanted to make the ties ourselves in our home town in California. This means that the ties cost more to produce than they would if we outsourced them to another country.
