DESIGN NAME: Float
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Exhibition Space
INSPIRATION: The inspiration of Float exhibition is to create off ground display area that makes audience experience the lightness of metal design to break general understanding of heaviness of metal reputation. The kinetic movement includes fourty Koma shaped pendants with a shiny gold finish.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Float is the permanent exhibition space, which is installed at the ground level of MOEA Innovation Center in Kaohsiung city, Taiwan for exhibiting metal products that are incorporating innovative uses of metal tooling. The exhibition features kinetic metal pendant movements and also floating pentagonal display stands for products.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The exhibition space is unique and flexible for various type of themes. The central office of MOEA will host various exhibition themes from the beginning of March 2018. Most of the audiences are coming from the main entrance of the building, and encounter the kinetic movements with forty gold pendants, where people can visually experience the innovative use of metal. After the kinetic exhibition, there are eight pentagonal display shelves that host different applications of metal tooling and product.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started the design phase in November 2017 and finished construction in January 2018 in Kaohsiung. The public opening is expected in the beginning of March.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main agenda of Float exhibition space is to showcase innovative use of metal tooling and product. Thus the design of space incorporates advanced digital technologies including kinetic movement as well as CNC fabrication. In order to create homogeneous atmosphere through entire space, the lighting setups have required careful considerations.
CHALLENGE: The exhibition is installed at the ground floor of MOEA Innovation center, which has already been installed delicate thin metal louvers on the ceiling finish. The Float exhibition is carefully selected its locations to avoid any obstacles on the building ceiling and installed without damaging any of existing utilities. The most difficult part of the installation is the kinetic movement structure, which is over 400 kg weight hanged from the ceiling with all kinetic motors and wiring of pendants.
