DESIGN NAME: Big Dipper
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table
INSPIRATION: The idea originated from the dipper in the sky. Each small table is an independent individual, but they are a collective. Just like us,we are independent and natural.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In this design, I tried to explore the relationship between the individual and the collective and the connection between man and nature. Each small tray like every single individual. The legs below are independent and interconnected. We need independent space and to be respected, but we still need collective care and love. Just like pointing the way to people in the sky, Big Dipper make people sitting together on the ground and sharing. We are independent and not lonely.through this design, that makes people more open and more willing to share.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Big Dipper Coffee Table is very suitable for the party. The high and low tables are designed for placing different things. And it allows everyone to have its own independent space. We sit around it as the center of the night sky. In this era of private space, each guest has its own small table. Even if people use the same set of tea sets (coffee sets), it will not be embarrassed to get the wrong cup.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2017 and finished in November 2017 in Shanghai, and was exhibited in Guangzhou Design Week in November 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main material of the table is ash.The legs are connected by a mortise and tenon. Between the table leg and the wooden connection with screws and metal sheet.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We used questionnaires to interview young consumers in the big cities of China. We're more focused on the function of the gathering. We have confirmed some problems. Big Dipper solves the awkward problem of taking the wrong cup, the boring design problem, and the problem of independence and loneliness.
CHALLENGE: The most difficult part of this design is that there are too many legs. How to keep the table stable by maintaining the balance and stability of the legs? We have used the ancient chinese mortise and tenon technology to make the structure of the legs. The process is very difficult, because the opening in the middle of the leg make it easy to break the leg. But we still overcome this difficulty. And we also use invisible screws and metal iron sheet to keep the overall design neat and beautiful.
