DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
GUILIN

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Environment Cleansing Lamp

INSPIRATION:
Inspired the by beautiful cascading mountains of Guilin in China and a famous chinese poetry that says "Foolish man moves Mountains". What this poem means is that with perseverance one can achieve any task even when no one believes them. Our lamp hopes to inspire a new generation of environment cleansing design and remind the importance of nature to us.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Inspired the by beautiful cascading mountains of Guilin in China, the lamp is composed of a base that has 3 equal length slots allowing for Photocatalytic coated acrylic "mountains"; to placed in random as the user wishes. These mountains can be taken out easily and compose entirely based on the user. Just like the mountains, they are helping to rejuvenate our environment and remind us on how we are intertwined with nature. The special photocatalytic treatment works with any light and wind during the day and when night falls, the illumination of the lamp will continue the cleansing process.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The lamp itself will have a touch sensitive on/off switch as well as internal charging battery. Once the light base is on the acrylic mountains will absorb the light source from below and illuminate. This will also cause the chemical reaction of the photocatlysis and start cleaning the air around. During the daytime the coating will also work with any light source and moving air.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The design concept originally started all the way back in 2011 but went through many changes. Photocatalytic implementation started research in 2016 and first prototype can completed in Febuary 2018. The market release time should be end of 2018.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Lighting Products and Lighting Projects Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The movable mountains are laser cut acrylic with light grooves and photocatalytically treated. The base is sand blasted steel finish with embedded Led light trough that illuminates the mountains while also activating the air cleansing function of the lamp.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Base is L 60cm x W 9cm x H 3.5cm, Mountain 1 is H 41.5cm x W 33.5cm, Mountain 2 is H 31cm x W 25cm, Mountain 3 is H 29cm x W 18.5cm, Mountain 4 is H 15cm x W 17.5cm. All Mountain are 5mm thick and comes in various finishes and entirely customisable.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Urbanization, is the word of our times. In 1950 only 30% of the world’s population lives in the city but it is projected that by 2050 over 70% of the global populations will be urban dwellers. With such rapid growth cities are faced with undaunting levels of pollution unheard of just a century ago. As architects and designers we are entering into a new Era of environmental thinking that has to either help our planet, recycle some of our creations and consider the biosynthesis of humans with nature. Furniture has always been one of the most vibrant discipline in design as comparatively the physical restriction is less thus leaving more leeway to push for innovation. There are many up-cycle creations, environmental conscious ideas and even some that biomorphs with part of our body. But I wonder, what if a piece of furniture that can help your wellbeing as well as the external environment while still looking good in any given situations. Working with our Italian technical partners we finally came up with solution that can use Light and Air, 2 elements provided by nature, to clean our environment of toxins and bacteria! Let me explain more: Photocatalysis is process that uses nano-particles and Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) to clean VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds). When exposed to any ultraviolet light source, such as the sun, the coating's oxidative property decomposes organic substances such as microbes on its surface. In addition, the hydrophilic nature of the coating causes water that comes into contact to form an even layer, thereby allowing the dust and dirt that have accumulated on the surface to be washed away. These two properties create the "self-cleaning" effect. While this process was revolutionary as an architectural material it is very limited to UV rays which are harmful in long term exposure to human skin. With our Italian technical partners we have come up with a new compound that uses Tungsten Trioxide (WO3) to creates the same cleansing effect. What this offer as an advantage is that the activation process only needs any source of light and natural air to start the process. This can be done with any present interior/exterior light source and air from natural wind or even air condition units, thus eliminating any direct exposure to UV rays. This specialized treatment can be applied to any surface and is Non-toxic and Bio-degradable. Our design, started life as a tribute the amazing rolling hills of Guilin in China. The design has a rectangular base that is embedded with LED lighting within and 5mm acrylic panels (I call them the Hills!) in variety of texture and finishes can be placed freely on top of the grooves situated on the base. Once the light is switched on the acrylic will absorb the vertical illumination. One of such finished is a one way mirror treatment that during the day the hills will reflect the surroundings and once it is switched on the 3D laser cut grooves will light up. All the hills are photocatalytic coated thus cleaning your environment during day and night. There are 2 sizes for this design, one is a table top lamp that can clean your environment and illuminate during your sleep or work while a second much larger size can act as partition zoning for different area of interior or exterior spaces (partition screens are also a traditional Chinese invention). Due to the difference in size the photocatalytic cleansing effect increases because the larger the surface area, the effect becomes stronger. If you purchase more “hills”, the better it can clean your environment and our planet; you become part of the great change. It is the world first environment cleansing lighting system that transforms into an architectural space. Movable freely as we want to empower your inner artistic talent. Be free to create, illuminate and contribute to a better environment for our present and future generations.

CHALLENGE:
As with most of our design customization is the key and we wanted the concept to change easily via the user. Also accessories has to be implemented conveniently and the concept need to relate to the constant changes of nature and our planet.
