DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Spiral Pavilion

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Parametric Cardboard Structure

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration of Spiral Pavilion is the Sakura pedal flying with the wind in a springtime. The facade cut out pattern is to represent the flow of the pavilion, and same time creates very interesting lighting effect to the inside space.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Spiral Pavilion is a one hundred percent cardboard made the self-standing structure, which is installed at the ground floor of the C-Hub, National Cheng Kung University in Tainan City, Taiwan. The structure and skin are generated through a digital design process that implements parametric modeling and digital CNC fabrication.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Spiral Pavilion is semi-closed brainstorming space for the students of NCKU Creative Industry department. There is a few stool placed inside of pavilion for them to sit and discuss. The pavilion provides a non-pressured atmosphere for students to get inspired and motivates them to discuss their projects.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The first version of Spiral Pavilion was developed August 2014. The design period is about one month and another month of developing fabrication drawing. Finally, November 2014 the pavilion was installed at C-Hub for the space opening. While there were a few updates on the pavilion for maintenance, the latest version of pink mosaic version was reinstalled at C-Hub in September 2016 for the Taiwan Design Expo, Betwin Ocean Exhibition.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
1.5 mm painted cardboard for skin and 7 mm cardboard for structure

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
2.8 meter width, 3.3 meter depth, 2.1 meter height

TAGS:
SprialPavilion, CardboarStructure, ParametricModeling, DigitalFabrication

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The main agenda of Spiral Pavilion research is to create structural integrity with only cardboard material, as well as how to execute complex geometry of structure by utilizing parametric modeling and digital fabrication tools.

CHALLENGE:
The most challenging point of constructing Spiral Pavilion is the accuracy of a digital file, and by hand construction. Each part of the pavilion is labeled by CNC machine, which can also cut and press for folding lines. Since cardboard material is not necessarily rigid material to create enough structural strength, the design for parts joint and details needed to pay a lot of attention.
